Chapter 9 - THE ORDER IN DANIEL’S NAMEPolice entered the Reading distribution warehouse at 10:20 that night.
They found three modified transport vans, medical coolers, sedation kits, and children’s clothing sorted by size.
No children remained inside.
The computers had been wiped minutes earlier.
One paper file survived inside a locked dispatch cabinet.
S-16: Owen Clarke—North Station.
S-17: Ethan Reeves—Recovery pending.
The recovery order carried Daniel’s electronic signature.
His copied voice authorization played when investigators opened the file:
“I consent to Ethan’s immediate return for medical stabilization.”
It sounded exactly like him.
The document claimed Daniel had reviewed the trial, approved the medication, and requested that law enforcement not interfere.
Halcyon had prepared the order in case Ethan reached home.
If Daniel surrendered him, the company could claim voluntary compliance.
If Daniel resisted, it could portray him as an unstable father reversing an earlier medical decision.
Quinn contacted the judge who signed Lauren’s emergency petition.
The judge denied approving it.
Her electronic seal had been stolen through an online custody seminar sponsored by Halcyon.
Every authority surrounding Ethan had been copied.
Parent.
Doctor.
Hospital.
Judge.
The network did not need genuine permission when it could manufacture enough versions to overwhelm the truth.
The warehouse cameras revealed Melissa leaving with Aaron Pike and Dr. Crane six minutes before police arrived.
Their van headed toward Philadelphia.
Not away from Daniel.
Toward the children’s hospital.
Quinn called hospital security.
The line failed.
Daniel rushed from the command vehicle toward his car.
Quinn stopped him.
“You cannot charge into a building Halcyon may control.”
“My son is there.”
“So are armed officers.”
Daniel forced himself to remain still while tactical units surrounded the hospital.
Dr. Monroe moved Ethan into a protected room with no networked equipment. She disconnected the hospital Wi-Fi and placed manual guards at both corridor entrances.
Lauren remained in another secured wing after asking to see Ethan.
Her supervised visit had been denied.
At 11:03 p.m., Lauren disappeared.
A nurse found her room empty and the bathroom vent open. Security footage showed a woman wearing Dr. Monroe’s coat escorting Lauren through the service elevator.
The woman’s face remained hidden.
Daniel called Lauren.
She answered on the fourth attempt.
“Where are you?”
“I’m trying to fix this.”
“With whom?”
“Dr. Crane said he’ll release Owen if I complete the family file.”
“What does that mean?”
“I have to bring him the red folder.”
“Patricia said the folder contains recordings.”
“It contains the original selection contract.”
“Lauren, come back.”
“If I do, they’ll move the children again.”
“You do not know that.”
“I know what they told me.”
“You have followed what they told you every time.”
Lauren began crying.
“I can’t lose Ethan.”
“You already chose the study over him. Do not make another secret choice and call it protection.”
She ended the call.
Quinn traced her phone to the hospital parking garage.
Officers found it on the ground beside an open service door.
Inside the phone case was a handwritten note:
Daniel, I’m sorry. They said Ethan was never the target. You were.
The hospital lights dimmed.
Dr. Monroe called from Ethan’s room.
The tracking sensor removed from his arm had begun broadcasting again from inside the shielded evidence container.
Its signal was impossible unless someone had replaced the device.
The sensor in evidence was a duplicate.
