PART 1

“He pushed his nine-month-pregnant wife off an icy cliff… then the rescue team found her alive.”

Peyton Vale opened her eyes to snow, blood, and the sound of a helicopter tearing through the sky above her.

Her white dress was ripped across the shoulder.

One side of her face was bruised.

Her fingers were numb.

Her other hand stayed locked over her swollen belly.

The baby moved once.

Weakly.

But alive.

A man in a red-and-black alpine rescue uniform dropped to his knees beside her on the icy ledge.

Snow whipped around his face.

His gloved hands cupped her cheeks.

“Ma’am, can you hear me?”

Peyton tried to speak.

Only a breath came out.

The rescuer leaned closer.

“Stay with me.”

Her lips trembled.

“He pushed me…”

The rescuer froze.

Peyton swallowed blood.

“For fifty million dollars.”

The helicopter spotlight swept over the ledge.

Ropes swung in the freezing wind.

The rescuer’s eyes moved to her belly, then back to her face.

His expression changed from professional focus to fierce protection.

“Stay with me.”

“Your baby is still fighting.”

Peyton grabbed his sleeve with what little strength remained.

Her vision blurred.

“How do you know my name?”

The rescuer went still.

Not because of the storm.

Not because of the cliff.

Because her question cut through something older than the rescue.

He leaned closer, his voice shaking beneath control.

“Because I’ve been searching for my daughter.”

Peyton stared at him.

The cold disappeared for half a second.

“My…”

A crack of pain tore through her body.

She screamed.

The pilot’s voice blasted through the radio.

“We need to lift her now!”

The rescuer clipped the harness around Peyton with fast, steady hands.

Above them, the cable dropped.

Below them, the mountain fell into white nothing.

Peyton tried to keep her eyes open.

The rescuer held her hand.

“I found you.”

His voice broke.

“I am not losing you now.”

As the harness tightened and the helicopter pulled them off the cliff, Peyton looked past his shoulder into the storm.

Somewhere above that mountain, her husband believed she was already dead.

He was wrong.
