PART 2

Peyton had not wanted to go to Mount Rainier.

That was the truth she would remember later.

Nolan Vale called it a babymoon.

A final romantic trip before their son arrived.

A chance to reset.

A chance to forgive.

A chance to make peace after months of cold dinners, locked study doors, and bank statements Peyton was no longer allowed to see.

He rented a private lodge with glass walls facing the mountain.

He hired a chef.

He bought Peyton a white maternity dress and said she looked like a winter bride.

She almost believed he was trying.

That was the cruelest part.

At nine months pregnant, hope becomes dangerous because your whole body is already preparing to love.

Nolan touched her belly in front of staff.

Called the baby “our future.”

Kissed Peyton’s forehead when cameras were nearby.

But at night, his voice changed.

He asked about her grandfather’s trust.

Again.

The trust Peyton inherited when she turned thirty.

Fifty million dollars.

Protected from marital claims unless she died and her spouse became legal guardian of her child.

Peyton had not understood the danger of that clause until Nolan began asking whether she had updated her estate documents.

“What if something happens during delivery?” he said.

“We need to be practical.”

Peyton told him the trust would remain under independent management for the baby.

Nolan’s face tightened.

Only for a moment.

Then he smiled.

“Of course.”

The next morning, he suggested a short walk near the overlook.

Peyton said the trail looked icy.

Nolan held out his hand.

“I’ve got you.”

She wanted to believe that sentence.

So she took his hand.

The cliff was quiet.

Snow covered the rocks.

Clouds moved low across the mountains.

Nolan stood behind her while she looked over the ridge.

Then his hand moved from her waist to her back.

Peyton heard him whisper.

“I’m sorry.”

Not like a husband.

Like a man ending a problem.

Then he pushed.

The world became sky, snow, stone, and screaming.

She hit the ledge hard enough to break the silence inside her body.

Above, Nolan looked down once.

His face was pale.

Then he turned and walked away.

Peyton placed both hands over her belly and whispered, “Please.”

The baby moved.
