PART 7

Nolan was arrested five days after the fall.

Not at the hospital.

Not at the lodge.

At a bank.

That detail pleased Peyton more than she expected.

Detective Quinn waited until Nolan attempted to initiate emergency trust access through his attorney.

The request claimed Peyton was missing and presumed deceased.

It requested immediate temporary authority over the unborn child’s future estate.

Unborn.

That was how careless he was.

He did not know Eli had already been born.

He did not know Peyton had already named him.

He did not know the woman he pushed off a cliff was listening from a hospital bed while the police built the trap.

The bank conference room had cameras.

The trust officer had been warned.

Nolan wore a black coat and a grieving husband’s expression.

His attorney opened a folder.

Detective Quinn opened the door.

“Nolan Vale.”

He looked up.

For one second, he looked annoyed.

Then he saw the badge.

Then Gabriel behind her.

Nolan’s face changed.

Not enough for a confession.

Enough for truth.

“You are under arrest for attempted murder, attempted murder of an unborn child, insurance fraud, and conspiracy to commit financial exploitation.”

Nolan stood too fast.

“My wife is dead.”

Gabriel stepped forward.

“No.”

His voice was cold.

“She is not.”

Nolan’s mouth opened.

No sound came out.

Detective Quinn watched him carefully.

“Your son is alive too.”

That broke the performance completely.

“My son?”

The possessive word made Gabriel’s eyes harden.

Detective Quinn nodded to the officers.

They cuffed Nolan beside the mahogany table where he had come to collect his reward.

Peyton saw the footage later.

She did not smile.

She did not cheer.

She only whispered, “Good.”

Then she asked to see Eli.

The nurse brought him in wrapped in a blue blanket.

Tiny.

Warm.

Furious when moved.

Peyton held him against her chest and breathed through pain.

Gabriel stood beside the bed, looking at the baby with awe and grief tangled together.

“He has Lila’s mouth,” he said.

Peyton looked down.

“Did she smile a lot?”

Gabriel’s eyes filled.

“All the time.”

Peyton touched Eli’s cheek.

“Then he’ll know about her.”

Gabriel nodded.

“And about the cliff?”

Peyton’s voice grew firm.

“One day.”
