Chapter 13 - THE TRANSFER ORDER

Bennett Trust Company shut down Thomas’s credentials within minutes.
Every transaction requiring his authorization was suspended. Independent auditors reviewed the system for unauthorized access.
The forged neonatal transfer order had not yet been submitted.
It was a template waiting for a destination and date.
Martin needed only one final action.
Grace believed he intended to send Eli somewhere outside the court’s immediate jurisdiction, then claim Thomas had approved it for security.
Anna would hesitate to challenge an order bearing her father’s genuine seal.
The plan exploited newly restored trust.
Martin repeatedly turned relationships into vulnerabilities.
The trust company traced the credential theft to Thomas’s tablet.
He had used it at the hospital on Christmas night while waiting for news about Anna.
The device never left his possession.
A forensic technician found a malicious charging cable connected at the guest desk. It copied authentication tokens from any device attached to it.
Hospital security footage showed Martin placing the cable there hours before the dinner.
He had anticipated Thomas might come to the hospital after the call.
Or he intended to copy credentials from any attorney or official responding to Anna’s collapse.
Thomas blamed himself.
Anna stopped him.
“You used a charger in a hospital.”
“I should have protected the seal.”
“That is not the same as choosing to steal it.”
The distinction echoed what Emma—no, Anna—had demanded from him earlier.
Explain failure accurately.
Do not turn it into another person’s crime.
The trust company restored authority through three-person verification rather than a single credential.
Anna became one of the required voices.
For the first time, no transfer involving her assets or Eli could occur without her direct confirmation.
Dr. Hale removed the remaining electronic discharge permissions from Eli’s chart.
The hospital switched to paper verification under guard.
Then an ambulance arrived at the loading entrance.
Its crew carried a neonatal transport incubator and an order bearing Thomas’s stolen seal.
Destination: Willow Ridge Infant Care.
The document had been submitted before the credentials were disabled.
A nurse nearly released access because the order matched the hospital template.
The verbal code stopped it.
“What is the family phrase?” security asked.
The transport supervisor checked his tablet.
“No phrase is listed.”
The loading dock was locked.
Police searched the ambulance.
The crew worked for a legitimate contractor and believed they were completing an urgent protected transfer.
The request came from Martin’s rented office.
A sealed packet inside the vehicle contained Eli’s copied records, formula instructions, and a letter supposedly written by Anna.
I am too unstable to care for my son. Please do not allow me to interfere.
Anna read the forged statement.
Martin continued using the same central lie.
A woman’s distress meant incapacity.
A mother’s objection meant instability.
A powerful man’s document meant truth.
This time, the system paused.
The ambulance left empty.
Investigators traced the transport payment to Martin’s acquisition client.
The client was not a major corporation or secret empire.
It was a private investment company owned by Martin himself through a holding entity.
He had planned to purchase trust properties personally after David’s firm collapsed.
The conspiracy’s final beneficiary was the lawyer who created it.
Police froze the company.
Martin’s financial escape route disappeared.
He called Grace from an unregistered phone.
“Tell Anna the transfer was intended to protect the child.”
Grace activated recording.
“From whom?”
“From David. From Sylvia. From Thomas.”
“And place Eli under your control?”
“Temporary control.”
“You built the danger.”
“I built a transaction. The Mercers made it violent.”
“You selected them because they would.”
Martin became silent.
Then he asked to speak with Anna.
She refused.
“He has heard my voice in enough stolen recordings,” she said. “He does not get another one.”
The call ended.
Its location traced to the hospital parking structure.
Police sealed the exits.
Security cameras captured a man in scrubs entering the stairwell.
The face was hidden by a mask.
He carried no infant equipment.
