Chapter 4 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE HALLWAY
The Mercer home had six security cameras.
David told police that every device had been switched off for the private Christmas dinner.
He had disabled five.
The sixth camera belonged to the original alarm system and could be deactivated only through a separate service panel.
It faced the hallway connecting the kitchen to the dining room.
The footage began three hours before Anna fell.
Anna moved between the oven, counters, and dining table while relatives sat drinking wine. Each time she paused, Sylvia placed another task in her hands.
David entered the kitchen at 4:42 p.m.
“Did you take your medication?”
Anna nodded.
Sylvia looked toward him and tapped the pocket of her dress.
The real pills were inside it.
At 5:16, Anna leaned against the counter and said she felt dizzy.
David lowered his voice.
“You will not embarrass me tonight.”
“I need to lie down.”
“After my partners leave.”
Martin Sloan appeared behind him carrying the red folder.
“Do not let her disappear before the signature,” Martin said. “The bank’s compliance window closes at midnight.”
Anna turned.
“What bank?”
Martin smiled.
“Nothing you need to worry about.”
The recording showed David guiding Anna toward the stove rather than allowing her upstairs.
At 6:03, Sylvia removed the kitchen chair.
She carried it into the pantry.
When Anna later reached for a different chair, Sylvia shoved her.
The action had not been planned precisely, but the circumstances surrounding it had been.
Martin stood inside the dining room during the seizure.
He did not approach Anna.
He watched David.
When Julia called the ambulance, Martin collected several pages from the table and slipped out through the service corridor.
The camera captured the red folder beneath his coat.
Lena obtained a warrant for his office.
The firm’s receptionist said Martin had entered shortly after midnight, removed files, and left with two computer drives.
His desk contained a draft petition titled:
Emergency Determination of Incapacity and Temporary Spousal Control.
It described Anna as paranoid, emotionally unstable, financially irresponsible, and unable to understand her pregnancy.
The petition claimed David had repeatedly attempted to secure treatment while Anna refused.
It was the reverse of reality.
Attached statements carried Sylvia’s signature and those of two dinner guests.
The guests denied signing them.
Their signatures had been copied from the holiday attendance list.
Julia’s name appeared on a third statement.
It claimed she witnessed Anna attack Sylvia.
Julia stared at the page.
“I was supposed to become their respectable witness.”
Instead, she had recorded David refusing the ambulance.
Her cellphone video showed Anna convulsing, Sylvia wiping the counter, and David ordering everyone to remain quiet.
Martin could not transform that scene into voluntary incapacity.
The forged petition also requested authority over Anna’s unborn child.
The language allowed David to approve emergency delivery, neonatal placement, and temporary guardianship if Anna remained unconscious.
Dr. Hale placed a security restriction on Anna’s chart.
No decisions could be made without Anna’s direct consent or independent court review.
Thomas asked Grace Holloway, a trust attorney unaffiliated with his company, to represent Anna.
He did not appoint himself.
“My daughter chooses what happens next,” he said.
When Anna woke again, Grace explained every document.
“Do you want your father involved?”
“Yes.”
“Do you want him making decisions for you?”
“No.”
Thomas nodded without offense.
That answer mattered more than gratitude.
Grace then showed Anna the red-folder inventory.
One page concerned the Collins Family Trust.
If Anna signed, David’s firm could pledge part of her future inheritance against a private loan.
The loan application had already been approved conditionally.
The amount was fifteen million dollars.
Anna stared at David’s forged signature beneath hers.
“What was he buying?”
Grace looked toward Thomas.

👉 David’s law firm was close to financial collapse, and Anna’s inheritance had been selected to keep it alive.
