PART 8
The board meeting lasted seventeen minutes.
That was all Victoria needed.
Julian had spent years collecting titles.
Director.
Chief physician.
Public face of the maternity wing.
Future candidate for system president.
Victoria brought documents.
Staff complaints.
Restricted chart access logs.
Privilege changes.
Suspicious transfer orders.
A nurse reassignment list showing every employee Chloe trusted had been moved off her floor.
Security footage of Julian entering Chloe’s suite after midnight.
Photographs of Chloe’s injuries taken by police.
And the C-section chart with pre-signed newborn transfer authorization.
The older executive, Samuel Crane, looked sick halfway through.
“I approved his promotion track.”
Victoria looked at him.
“Yes.”
He lowered his eyes.
“I am sorry.”
“Be useful instead.”
That was Victoria.
Grief sharpened into instruction.
The legal counsel read the suspension terms.
Immediate removal from clinical leadership.
Revocation of facility access pending criminal investigation.
Preservation of all records.
Independent review of patient safety under Julian’s administration.
Notification to the medical board.
Notification to law enforcement.
Notification to partner insurers.
One board member hesitated.
“We need to consider reputational risk.”
Victoria turned to him slowly.
“My daughter is upstairs with a boot mark on her back.”
“The reputation has already spoken.”
No one mentioned risk again.
Downstairs, staff began receiving alerts.
Julian’s badge was deactivated.
His office sealed.
His accounts frozen.
His name removed from active surgery schedules.
Every door he used to control other people began closing at once.
In the police holding area, Julian demanded his phone.
He was denied.
He demanded Victoria.
She did not come.
He demanded Chloe.
That triggered another charge discussion.
He demanded a lawyer.
That one he received.
By evening, Chloe was transferred under police escort to Hartwell Women’s Center.
Victoria rode beside her.
Dr. Patel followed in the ambulance.
Lorraine came too, officially as nurse support and unofficially because Chloe refused to let go of her hand.
During the ride, Chloe whispered, “What if he takes the baby later?”
Victoria looked at the city lights passing outside.
“He will be fighting to keep his medical license before he ever gets near custody.”
Chloe’s eyes filled.
“And if the court believes him?”
Victoria took her hand.
May you like
“Then the court will meet me.”
