PART 9

Chloe delivered her son at 4:12 a.m.

Not at Julian’s clinic.

Not under his surgical team.

Not under the lights he had tried to turn into a threat.

She delivered at Hartwell Women’s Center with Dr. Patel leading, Lorraine beside her, Victoria near her head, and two officers outside the hall.

The C-section was necessary.

It was also safe.

Those two truths mattered.

When the baby cried, Chloe began sobbing before she saw him.

The sound was small.

Furious.

Perfect.

Dr. Patel smiled behind her mask.

“He is here.”

Victoria looked at her grandson for the first time and covered her mouth.

For sixty-one years, she had controlled boardrooms without trembling.

That morning, one tiny cry undid her completely.

Chloe whispered, “Is he okay?”

Dr. Patel answered, “He is strong.”

Lorraine brought the baby close to Chloe’s face.

Chloe kissed his cheek.

“What is his name?” Victoria asked.

Chloe looked exhausted.

Broken open.

Alive.

“Henry.”

Victoria froze.

Her late husband’s name.

Chloe’s father.

The man who had helped Victoria build the first hospital before his heart gave out in the parking garage at forty-two.

Victoria touched Chloe’s hair.

“He would have loved that.”

Chloe looked at her baby.

“I wanted him to have a name Julian didn’t choose.”

That was when Victoria cried.

Quietly.

So Chloe would not carry that too.

Three hours later, Julian’s attorney filed for emergency access to the newborn.

He claimed Chloe was unstable.

He claimed she was being manipulated by Victoria.

He claimed Hartwell Medical Group had removed him for corporate reasons.

Victoria read the filing in Chloe’s recovery room while Henry slept in the bassinet.

Then she handed it to Elliot, her counsel.

“Respond with everything.”

Elliot nodded.

“Everything?”

Victoria looked at Chloe’s bruised back, carefully documented and now covered beneath a hospital gown.

“Everything.”

By noon, the court had photographs, medical opinions, police reports, security footage, chart irregularities, staff statements, and the threatened C-section quote Chloe had repeated to three witnesses.

Julian did not get emergency access.

He got supervised legal review.

Chloe slept for four straight hours after hearing that.

Victoria sat beside the bassinet and watched Henry breathe.
