Chapter 13 - Ruth’s SignatureThe placement authorization looked genuine.

Ruth recognized the date.

It was signed the morning of the camping trip when Rebecca disappeared.

Her late husband told her it was a school medical form for both twins.

Ruth signed a stack of papers without reading each page.

One of them had been substituted.

She had not knowingly sold Rebecca.

But her signature had made the abduction look legal.

Brooke stared at the document.

“You signed it.”

“I signed something else.”

“That is what everyone says.”

Ruth understood why the paper mattered emotionally even if fraud could be proven.

Brooke had lived her entire childhood believing her first family surrendered her.

Now the official record confirmed that belief.

Adam did not need the document to win in court.

He needed it to fracture the Bennetts before they could stand together.

Olivia requested the original paper.

The live feed displayed only a copy.

Detective Price traced Adam to an archive server rather than the wellness center itself. The background was prerecorded.

He could be anywhere.

Leah touched Brooke’s arm.

“Mom was tricked.”

Brooke pulled away.

“You don’t know that.”

“I know how they use signatures.”

“So do I.”

Brooke’s anger was not irrational.

Ruth had spent years trusting a husband who concealed payments. She had failed to question the foundation that took Rebecca.

She had been deceived.

She had also missed signs.

“I should have read everything,” Ruth said.

Olivia warned her not to make legal admissions.

Ruth continued.

“I should have searched beyond the river. I should have questioned the money. I should have believed the feeling that something was wrong.”

Brooke looked at her.

“That doesn’t mean you agreed to lose me.”

“No.”

“Then say that.”

“I never agreed to lose you.”

For the first time, Brooke cried without hiding her face.

The court ordered a forensic review of the signature and paper source.

The ink used for Ruth’s signature was twenty-five years old.

The rest of the contract text had been printed six years later.

Her signature had been cut from the school form and transferred onto a new document.

Carrington Behavioral Research created the placement agreement after Rebecca was already living as Brooke.

The fraud was physical, not merely digital.

Adam’s final defense weakened.

Then the family photo from the pool party revealed another detail.

Behind young Leah and Brooke stood Victor Hale.

He had worked as the Carrington program’s junior attorney during Rebecca’s childhood.

Victor knew both identities from the beginning.

Police detained him for questioning as he tried to leave the courthouse.

He denied involvement.

Detective Price showed him the notebook from Adam’s storage unit.

Payments connected Victor to every sealed hearing.

He requested an attorney.

Before saying anything else, he whispered to Ruth:

“Adam is trying to reach Margaret Carrington.”

Brooke’s adoptive mother had not appeared anywhere in the current investigation.

Margaret was eighty-two and supposedly living with dementia in a private residential home.

The facility reported she had disappeared that morning.

Security footage showed Adam escorting her into a car.

Margaret Carrington was the only surviving founder who knew where the original research archive was located.

That archive could contain unedited footage of Rebecca’s abduction, Leah’s confinement, and dozens of other children.

Adam was no longer trying to preserve his family story.

He was trying to destroy the source.

Brooke checked an old memory.

“Margaret used to say the truth was buried where the children learned to breathe.”

Ruth understood.

The original archive was not beneath Silver Pines.

It was beneath the old community pool.

The same place where Adam had taken Miles.

Police returned immediately.

The drained pool floor contained a circular maintenance cover no one had opened during the earlier search.

Beneath it was a ladder descending into darkness.

A voice echoed from below.

Margaret Carrington.

“Rebecca?”

Brooke stood at the edge.

The old woman could not see her yet.

But she remembered the stolen child’s original name.

👉 The founder who helped erase Rebecca’s identity was waiting beneath the pool with the original archive—and Adam was somewhere inside with her.
