Chapter 2 - The Man in the HallwayRuth moved the phone behind her before Brooke could take it.

“Back away.”

Brooke’s hand remained suspended between them.

Adam looked toward the hallway.

A tall man wearing a Silver Pines polo stood beneath the family photographs. Ruth recognized him from the party invitations as Miles Carter, the private swim instructor Adam praised constantly.

Miles looked nervous rather than angry.

“You shouldn’t be here,” Adam told him.

“You said the lesson receipt was destroyed.”

Brooke stepped into the hallway and lowered her voice.

“Not in front of the child.”

Ruth kept recording.

“What shouldn’t Maisie remember?”

Miles looked toward the little girl.

His face tightened with shame.

Adam pushed past Brooke.

“This is a family misunderstanding. Everyone needs to return to the party.”

Ruth held up the phone.

“I have a child with unexplained bruises, a receipt for closed-door lessons, and a witness saying she wasn’t supposed to remember.”

Miles shook his head.

“I’m not a witness.”

“You were there.”

“I didn’t touch her.”

Maisie whispered behind Ruth, “He watched.”

Miles closed his eyes.

Adam reached for the phone.

Ruth stepped back and struck the bathroom panic alarm installed beside the shower after a previous renovation. A shrill tone filled the hallway.

Guests began moving toward the house.

Adam stopped.

He could not seize Ruth’s phone in front of twenty witnesses without exposing himself.

Brooke immediately changed her expression.

She began crying.

“Maisie has been struggling with an intense fear of water. We arranged private therapeutic lessons. Ruth is frightening her by turning ordinary training marks into abuse.”

Ruth looked directly at Miles.

“Are finger-shaped bruises part of your therapy?”

“No.”

Adam turned on him.

“You signed the treatment plan.”

“It wasn’t a treatment plan.”

Brooke’s tears vanished.

Miles reached into his pocket but hesitated.

Adam noticed.

“What do you have?”

“Nothing.”

Adam moved toward him.

Miles backed into the hallway table, knocking over a framed family photograph.

The glass cracked.

The picture showed Adam, Brooke, Maisie, and Maisie’s late mother, Leah, at a lake house five years earlier.

Brooke was supposed to have met Adam two years after Leah died.

Yet she stood in the background of the photograph wearing a Silver Pines staff shirt.

Ruth picked it up.

“Why are you in this picture?”

Brooke’s face emptied.

“That isn’t me.”

“It is.”

Ruth remembered the day clearly. Leah had brought Maisie, then an infant, to the lake house for her first family reunion. Adam claimed Brooke had never been there.

Miles looked at the photograph and whispered, “That was the first trial.”

Ruth turned.

“What trial?”

Adam grabbed him by the shirt.

Miles shoved him away.

“The one they used on Leah.”

The party had gone silent outside the bathroom.

Several relatives stood in the foyer, watching.

Ruth picked up Maisie and carried her toward the front door.

Adam blocked her path.

“You are not taking my daughter.”

Ruth held her granddaughter tighter.

“I’m taking her to a doctor.”

Brooke raised her phone.

“I’m calling the police. You’re kidnapping her.”

Maisie lifted her head from Ruth’s shoulder.

“Grandma, the cold room is under the pool.”

Miles looked at Adam.

Adam stopped breathing.

Ruth did not know what the cold room was.
