Chapter 8 - The Pink Swimsuit AccountThe flower speaker inside Maisie’s swimsuit contained more than audio equipment.

Its receiver had connected to a private online account.

Investigators traced the account to a user named LBennett1979.

Leah’s initials.

Her birth year.

The account had logged in from three Carrington facilities over the past five years.

Someone using Leah’s identity remained active.

Ruth requested access.

The account contained short unsent messages.

Maisie is getting taller.

Ruth still wears the bird.

Brooke remembers more when she hears pool water.

Adam believes repetition can replace blood.

The writing sounded like Leah.

But digital identity had been forged throughout the case.

Olivia advised caution.

The account’s most recent draft was dated the previous evening.

The pool party is the trigger. If Maisie refuses the swimsuit, Ruth will take her inside. Brooke will follow. The receipt must remain beside the sink.

Ruth stared.

Someone had planned the bathroom discovery.

The receipt had not been left accidentally.

The unused swimsuit, running tap, and family photograph had all guided Ruth toward evidence.

Leah—or someone pretending to be Leah—had arranged the confrontation.

“Why use Maisie?” Ruth asked.

Detective Price answered carefully.

“Because Adam watched every adult. A four-year-old’s refusal may have been the only signal he wouldn’t recognize as planned.”

Ruth hated the logic.

Even a rescue plan had used the child’s fear.

A new message appeared in the account while investigators watched.

Do not bring Maisie to Lake House One. Adam wants Ruth to follow the old route.

The login originated from a moving vehicle near Interstate 65.

Police traced it to Brooke’s SUV.

The vehicle stopped at a rest area.

Officers found it abandoned.

Inside were Brooke’s phone, blood on a tissue, and a damp towel from Silver Pines.

A handwritten note lay beneath the driver’s seat.

Ruth—my name was Rebecca before they taught me to be Brooke. I hurt Maisie because Adam said Leah would die if I refused. That does not make it forgivable. Do not let him call coercion innocence.

Ruth read the note twice.

Brooke understood what she had done.

She was asking not to be excused.

The note contained directions to another facility beneath Carrington Children’s Wellness.

That was where Leah had been moved after Silver Pines became unsafe.

Brooke warned that Adam planned to trigger an evacuation using a false medical emergency, then move Leah through the pediatric transport system.

The family court order for Maisie’s transfer had served two purposes.

It would place the child under Carrington control.

It would also create enough activity to conceal Leah’s transport.

Detective Price coordinated a search of the wellness center.

The underground level held several private rooms.

One bed was still warm.

A wall calendar carried Leah’s name.

On the bedside table sat Ruth’s silver bird necklace.

Ruth touched her neck.

Her own necklace was still there.

The one in the room belonged to Rebecca. Ruth had given matching necklaces to both twins before the camping trip.

Someone had preserved it for twenty-five years.

A security video showed Brooke entering the room that morning.

Leah sat on the bed.

Older.

Thin.

Alive.

The sisters looked at each other through tears.

Brooke said, “I remember you.”

Leah answered, “Then help Maisie forget us.”

Brooke shook her head.

“No. We stop making children carry adult secrets.”

Adam entered with two transport workers.

The feed ended.

Officers found the service garage empty.

A pediatric van had left twelve minutes earlier.

Its destination was listed as Nashville Children’s Hospital.

The hospital had no record of the transfer.

Then Ruth’s phone rang.

Brooke whispered, “He has Leah.”

“Where?”

“The old family pool.”

Ruth knew the place.

It was the community pool where Rebecca disappeared twenty-five years earlier.

👉 Adam was taking Leah back to the same pool where the Carrington system first erased Rebecca’s identity.
