Margaret’s attorney was named Harold Price.
He had been Henry’s college friend.
He spoke slowly, dressed badly, and remembered every clause he had ever written.
At 11:42 p.m., Harold was in his kitchen making tea when Margaret called.
By midnight, he had frozen the primary accounts.
By 12:18 a.m., he had notified the bank trust department.
By 12:31 a.m., he had flagged Margaret’s property title for unauthorized activity.
By 12:47 a.m., he had sent an alert to the home security company to revoke all secondary door codes and disable every spare key fob.
At 1:05 a.m., Margaret sat at her small writing desk while Alice slept on the bed behind her.
Harold’s voice came through the phone.
“Margaret, I need to ask plainly.”
“Do you feel safe?”
Margaret looked toward the bedroom door.
“Yes.”
“For tonight.”
“Do you believe Caroline has your original estate folder?”
Margaret opened the lower drawer of the desk.
Empty.
Her chest tightened.
“She does.”
Harold exhaled.
“That explains the title inquiry.”
Margaret gripped the phone.
“What inquiry?”
“Someone requested a preliminary transfer review on Cedar Lane.”
Her eyes moved to the family photos.
Caroline at seven.
Caroline at graduation.
Caroline holding newborn Alice.
Faces can lie even from frames.
“Can she take the house?”
“No.”
“Not legally.”
Margaret knew Harold well enough to hear the warning inside that answer.
“But?”
“But people who are desperate sometimes try to make illegal look temporary until damage is done.”
Margaret stood.
Her knees hurt.
She ignored them.
“What do I do?”
“Document everything.”
“Do not confront her alone.”
“Do not let them into the house.”
Margaret looked at Alice.
“If they come here tomorrow, Alice will see.”
Harold’s voice softened.
“Alice already saw enough to save you.”
That sentence broke something in Margaret.
She turned away so she would not wake the child with tears.
Then Harold asked, “Did Caroline ever take your medical forms?”
Margaret remembered the blue folder missing from the kitchen drawer.
The appointment card Caroline said she would file.
The neurologist report after Margaret forgot one name at church and Caroline called it “a decline.”
“Yes.”
Harold was quiet.
Then he said, “Margaret, they are not only after money.”
