PART 5

At 6:20 a.m., a locksmith arrived in a white van with no logo.

At 6:33 a.m., the front deadbolt came out.

At 6:51 a.m., the back door lock was replaced.

At 7:05 a.m., the garage keypad was reset.

At 7:18 a.m., the security company confirmed every old code had been erased.

Margaret watched from the foyer with a cup of coffee she did not drink.

Alice sat on the stairs wrapped in a quilt.

Every small metallic click sounded like a sentence.

Not anymore.

Not anymore.

Not anymore.

The locksmith handed Margaret four new keys.

She put three in Harold’s envelope.

One stayed in her palm.

Alice looked at it.

“Is Mommy’s key broken?”

Margaret sat beside her on the stairs.

“It no longer belongs to this house.”

Alice nodded slowly.

“Will I still belong?”

The question nearly ruined Margaret’s composure.

She pulled the child into her arms.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

“You belong because you are loved.”

“Keys are for doors.”

“Love is not a lock.”

Alice leaned against her.

For ten minutes, the house was peaceful.

Then a black SUV turned into the driveway.

Caroline was driving.

Brett sat beside her.

They were not supposed to be home before noon.

Margaret stood.

Alice stiffened.

“Grandma…”

“Go to the kitchen.”

“But—”

“Harold is on the phone in there.”

That comforted the child enough to move.

Margaret waited in the foyer as Caroline stepped out in sunglasses and a camel coat, carrying a folder.

Brett walked behind her with a smugness that had not heard the locks change.

Caroline reached the front door without knocking.

She inserted her key.

It did not turn.

Her hand froze.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Brett frowned.

“What’s wrong?”

Caroline looked at the lock.

Then through the side window.

Margaret stood inside, visible and calm.

Caroline knocked once.

Sharp.

“Mom, open the door.”

Margaret did not move.

Caroline’s smile appeared.

Thin.

Dangerous.

“We need to talk.”

Margaret lifted her phone.

“We already are.”

Caroline stared.

Margaret spoke into the line.

“Harold, they’re here.”

From the phone speaker, Harold’s voice answered.

“Good.”

May you like

“Caroline, this call is being recorded.”
