PART 9

Caroline was not arrested that morning.

Not immediately.

That disappointed Alice.

Children want justice to look quick.

Sirens.

Handcuffs.

Bad people taken away.

Adults know justice sometimes begins with paperwork.

Deputy Miller took statements.

From Margaret.

From Alice with child services present.

From Mrs. Alvarez, who had seen Caroline enter the house without knocking several times.

From the locksmith.

From Harold.

The folder was logged.

The stolen key was surrendered.

The bank confirmed attempted account access from an IP address linked to Brett’s office.

The title company confirmed someone had requested a valuation using Margaret’s property parcel.

By noon, Caroline and Brett were ordered to leave the property.

By evening, Harold had filed for a protective financial injunction.

By morning, all family access was legally suspended.

Caroline called twenty-three times.

Margaret answered none.

She listened to one voicemail only because Harold told her to preserve it.

Her daughter’s voice was frantic.

Mom, you don’t understand.

We were trying to protect you.

Brett’s business is in trouble.

We were going to pay everything back.

Alice exaggerated.

Please don’t ruin us.

Margaret stopped the message there.

She sat at the kitchen table with Alice coloring beside her.

Ruin us.

Caroline still thought the harm was what happened to her after being caught.

Not what she had done before.

Alice looked up.

“Is Mommy going to jail?”

Margaret put the phone down.

“I don’t know.”

Alice’s eyes filled.

“Do I have to go back with her?”

Margaret reached across the table.

“Not until the court decides it is safe.”

“What if she says I lied?”

Margaret’s heart broke quietly.

“Then I will tell the truth with you.”

Alice nodded.

That seemed to help.

Two weeks later, the hearing happened.

Caroline wore navy and cried before the judge entered.

Brett wore a gray suit and looked at his shoes.

Their attorney argued misunderstanding.

Stress.

Concern for an aging parent.

Family conflict exaggerated by a child.

That was when Alice’s recorded interview was played.

Small voice.

Soft.

Clear.

Mommy said Grandma was too old to keep the money.

Caroline stopped crying.

Because fake grief cannot breathe where real truth is speaking.
