She did not deny entering the house.
“I went back because Eleanor instructed me to.”
Diane laughed in triumph.
“So the loyal friend was stealing from her.”
Maggie ignored her.
Two months before her death, Eleanor gave Maggie a brass key and a sealed card. The card instructed her to return to the house after the body was removed, open the bottom drawer of the study desk, and retrieve a black ledger before Diane or Robert found it.
“Why didn’t you tell Harold?” Thea asked.
“Eleanor said no lawyer should hold every piece.”
The same structure again.
Alan had the primary will.
Harold had the trust.
Maggie had the ledger.
Eleanor had divided the truth because she trusted no single person with total control.
Maggie retrieved the ledger and placed it inside a safe-deposit box. She used Diane’s coat because Eleanor warned the home cameras might be accessed remotely.
“The pearls?” Diane demanded.
“They were costume jewelry Eleanor kept in the guest room.”
Diane touched her own ears again.
Harold looked closely.
“Those earrings belonged to Eleanor.”
“She gave them to me.”
“The primary will gave them to you today.”
Diane realized her mistake.
She had worn the inherited pearls before the will was read.
The jewelry was supposed to remain sealed in Eleanor’s house.
Alan requested that she remove them.
Diane refused.
Thea remembered seeing a small diamond missing from one clasp during Eleanor’s final hospital stay. The earrings Diane wore had the same flaw.
She had taken them before Eleanor died.
Maggie placed the brass key on the table.
“The ledger explains everything.”
“Where is it?” Harold asked.
“At First Commonwealth Bank.”
Robert smiled faintly.
“That branch closed this morning.”
Maggie looked startled.
A fire alarm triggered overnight. The bank claimed smoke damage and suspended access to safe-deposit boxes.
Robert’s construction company owned the building.
The timing was impossible to dismiss.
Harold called the bank’s legal department.
The safe-deposit vault had not burned.
But three boxes were removed under an emergency property-management authorization.
Maggie’s was one of them.
The authorization bore Robert’s signature.
He claimed the digital signature had been copied.
Alan requested security footage.
The bank manager said the camera server failed during the alarm.
Diane leaned back.
“Apparently everyone’s cameras fail when convenient.”
Thea studied her mother.
The remark sounded too satisfied.
Harold asked Maggie what the ledger contained.
“Names, dates, and every payment Eleanor made after she realized the family accounts were compromised.”
“What names?”
“Robert. Diane. Brandon. Dr. Hale.”
“Anyone else?”
Maggie hesitated.
“Alan.”
The primary-will attorney looked stunned.
Maggie explained that Eleanor suspected someone in Alan’s office had leaked draft documents to Robert.
Alan denied any knowledge.
Harold did not defend him.
Instead, he asked who witnessed Maggie place the ledger inside the box.
“Eleanor’s former driver.”
“What was his name?”
“Samuel Pike.”
Robert’s smile vanished.
Samuel Pike died in a hit-and-run accident one week after Eleanor entered hospice.
The driver was never identified.
Thea felt the story widening beyond stolen money.
Every person who could confirm Eleanor’s concerns had either disappeared or died.
Dr. Hale vanished.
Samuel Pike was killed.
Eleanor spent weeks inside an unlicensed facility.
Now the ledger had been removed during a manufactured bank emergency.
Harold’s phone rang.
First Commonwealth’s security director had located a backup feed stored off-site.
The footage showed Robert entering the vault corridor.
Beside him walked Alan’s senior paralegal.
They carried Maggie’s box into a private room.
When they emerged, the paralegal held the black ledger.
Robert carried a cream invitation identical to the one Eleanor sent Thea.
The footage ended with the paralegal making a phone call.
The number belonged to Dr. Hale.
