Chapter 8 - The Daughter in the Blue BlanketDiane insisted the ledger was false.

She said Eleanor invented the story to punish her for controlling medical decisions.

Robert supported her.

Brandon said nothing.

Thea looked toward Maggie.

“Tell me.”

Maggie folded her hands.

Thirty-one years earlier, Eleanor’s younger daughter, Caroline Whitmore, became pregnant while living in Boston. She was unmarried and refused to identify the father.

Caroline returned home shortly before giving birth.

Diane was pregnant at the same time.

Two babies were born within three weeks.

One was Thea.

The other died before leaving the hospital.

Thea felt the room tilt.

“Which baby belonged to whom?”

Maggie looked at Diane.

Diane answered through clenched teeth.

“You are mine.”

“Then why did Grandma question the records?”

“Because Caroline was unstable.”

“What happened to her?”

“She died.”

“When?”

“Shortly after you were born.”

Harold corrected her.

“Caroline Whitmore did not die.”

Diane’s face emptied.

Eleanor spent years searching for Caroline after she vanished from the hospital. A nurse later admitted that Robert arranged a private transfer to Glenhaven.

The same facility again.

Thea looked toward her father.

“You imprisoned Grandma’s daughter?”

“She needed treatment.”

“Was she my mother?”

Robert’s silence answered before words could.

Maggie described a blue blanket Eleanor kept inside a cedar chest. Caroline wrapped Thea in it at the hospital. Diane later registered herself as the mother.

“Why?” Thea asked.

Diane’s control finally cracked.

“My baby died.”

The confession emerged like something torn from her.

She had delivered a daughter with severe complications. The infant survived only two days. Diane was devastated, sedated, and terrified Robert would abandon her.

Caroline had given birth to a healthy girl but was being pressured to surrender parental rights during treatment.

Robert arranged the records.

Diane took Thea home.

“You stole me,” Thea whispered.

“I raised you.”

“You told me I was Grandma’s least favorite.”

“I was angry.”

“You spent my entire life making me feel unwanted while knowing she was my grandmother and my mother’s mother.”

Diane began crying.

“I loved you.”

“Then why did you pay a doctor to call me unstable?”

“Because you sounded like Caroline.”

The answer silenced everyone.

Whenever Thea questioned the family, Diane saw the woman whose child she had taken.

Whenever Thea resisted control, Robert saw the return of a threat he thought buried.

Dr. Hale’s diagnosis did not begin with money.

It began with fear that Thea would discover who she was.

Harold explained that Eleanor confirmed the hospital irregularities seven years earlier. She created the private trust after learning Thea was Caroline’s daughter.

The trust belonged to Eleanor’s direct biological line.

Thea was not merely a possible trustee.

She was the primary heir.

Brandon looked toward the document.

“If that is true, she receives everything?”

“Only after identity verification and integrity review.”

Diane seized on the condition.

“No DNA test exists.”

Harold produced a sealed sample collected from Eleanor before her death.

A court-approved laboratory had already compared it with a medical sample obtained from Thea during surgery three years earlier.

Thea was Eleanor’s biological granddaughter.

Diane was not her biological mother.

Robert demanded the report.

Harold refused to release the original.

Then Alan read the secondary clause.

If Thea’s identity was publicly challenged by the family, the trust would disclose Caroline’s current legal status.

Thea stared at him.

“Current?”

Caroline was alive.

She had spent thirty years under successive guardianships at Glenhaven House.

Dr. Hale currently controlled her medical authorization.

Thea’s mother had not disappeared.

She had been legally confined while Diane raised her child.

Harold’s phone vibrated.

An emergency alert came from Glenhaven.

Caroline Whitmore had been removed from the facility two hours earlier by a man using Robert Mitchell’s power-of-attorney documents.
