Chapter 9 - Glenhaven HouseHarold contacted state investigators while Alan requested an emergency preservation order.

Robert denied removing Caroline.

His signature appeared on the transfer authorization, but the document could have been copied from Eleanor’s estate files.

Diane stared at him with growing suspicion.

“You told me Caroline died in 1997.”

“I was told that.”

“By whom?”

“Dr. Hale.”

Thea almost laughed.

Every answer returned to the same missing physician.

Harold’s investigator reached Glenhaven before sunset.

The facility stood beside a frozen lake behind stone walls and iron gates. Public records described it as a private rehabilitation residence. Inside, investigators found locked patient rooms, unlicensed medication storage, and decades of guardianship files.

Caroline’s room had been cleared.

A blue blanket remained folded beneath her pillow.

Thea recognized it from Maggie’s description.

Inside the blanket’s hem was a tiny paper strip.

THEA—NAVY BLAZER—KESLER OFFICE—TODAY.

Caroline knew the exact outfit Thea wore to the will reading.

She knew the location.

She knew the date.

Someone had been communicating with her.

Security footage showed a woman entering Caroline’s room the previous night.

She wore pearl earrings and a long camel coat.

Diane claimed it was not her.

The woman’s face remained hidden until she turned toward the camera.

Maggie.

Again.

Thea looked at Eleanor’s friend.

“You saw her.”

Maggie nodded.

“Eleanor asked me to visit Caroline every month.”

“For how long?”

“Seven years.”

“And you never told me?”

“Caroline was terrified Robert would move her permanently if you knew too soon.”

Thea’s anger sharpened.

“You all keep deciding what truth I can survive.”

Maggie accepted the accusation.

“Yes.”

Caroline had recovered much of her clarity years ago. Glenhaven continued labeling her delusional because Robert funded the facility and Hale controlled her evaluations.

She began helping Eleanor document the family’s financial crimes.

The black ledger was partly Caroline’s work.

Maggie did not remove her from Glenhaven because Eleanor insisted the legal case had to be ready first.

“Then who took her today?” Harold asked.

Maggie looked toward Brandon.

Thea’s brother recoiled.

“Why me?”

“Caroline told me one person in the family had begun secretly helping her.”

Brandon’s face changed.

Years earlier, while reviewing company records, he discovered payments to Glenhaven. He visited expecting to find an elderly relative.

Instead, Caroline recognized him.

She told him Thea was her daughter.

Brandon did not believe her at first.

Then she described the exact birthmark beneath Thea’s left shoulder.

Only family knew about it.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Thea asked.

“I needed proof.”

“You had seven years.”

“I also needed Dad’s company.”

There it was.

Brandon wanted the truth, but not enough to risk his inheritance before securing his position.

He began copying documents and transferring small amounts of money into Caroline’s legal-defense fund.

He also borrowed heavily from Eleanor’s investments.

Help and exploitation existed in the same person.

“Did you remove her today?” Harold asked.

“No.”

“Did she know about the will reading?”

“Yes.”

Brandon gave Caroline a secure phone last month. She had been watching the conference-room feed through Rebecca’s unauthorized access.

Caroline knew Diane humiliated Thea.

She knew Harold opened the envelope.

She knew the trust had activated.

Then the phone disconnected.

Brandon received one final message:

DO NOT LET THEA FOLLOW THE AMBULANCE.

No one had mentioned an ambulance.

Glenhaven’s transfer log listed Caroline leaving in a white medical van.

The vehicle registration belonged to Mercer Medical Transport—the company connected to Samuel Pike’s death.

A highway camera located the van heading toward Eleanor’s mansion.

The house Robert believed he had inherited was now empty.

Its security system had just activated.

A live feed appeared on Harold’s laptop.

Caroline sat inside Eleanor’s dining room.

Dr. Hale stood behind her.
