PART 1
“She woke up after her mother-in-law shoved her down the stairs… only to see her husband kissing his mistress while one phone call destroyed everything he still thought he owned.”
Audrey Vale woke to the sound of a hospital monitor and a woman laughing behind glass.
At first, she did not know where she was.
Her arm was bandaged.
Her ribs burned when she breathed.
Her head felt split open by light.
Then she turned her eyes toward the glass partition outside her private hospital suite.
Dominic stood there in a white dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up, one hand buried in Paige Mercer’s hair.
He kissed her like Audrey was already a memory.
Paige leaned into him in a white satin dress, smiling against his mouth.
Audrey stared until the pain in her chest became sharper than the pain in her body.
Doctor Reed stepped beside the bed.
His face told her the truth before his voice did.
“Audrey… I’m sorry.”
He paused.
“You were eight weeks pregnant.”
The room stopped moving.
Audrey looked down at her stomach.
Her hand trembled over the blanket.
Eight weeks.
A child she had not even known how to name.
A child lost after Dominic’s mother shoved her down the marble staircase at the Vale estate.
Her throat closed.
Behind the glass, Dominic laughed at something Paige whispered.
Audrey’s tears fell silently.
Then the grief hardened.
Not disappeared.
Hardened.
She turned her face back to Doctor Reed.
“Then bring me the divorce papers.”
Doctor Reed froze.
“Audrey.”
“Please.”
Her voice was broken, but it was not weak.
On the bedside table, her phone buzzed.
Sophia Lang, her attorney, was already calling.
Audrey answered on speaker with shaking fingers.
Sophia’s voice came through sharp and steady.
“It’s done.”
“The divorce is filed, and every asset is frozen.”
Dominic’s phone buzzed outside the glass.
He pulled away from Paige, annoyed.
Then he read the screen.
His face drained.
“What do you mean none of it belongs to me?”
Audrey slowly lifted her eyes toward him.
He finally saw she was awake.
Finally saw she had heard.
Finally saw she was no longer crying for him.
She held the phone tighter.
“Enjoy the family you chose.”
Dominic stepped toward the glass in panic.
But the door to Audrey’s room was already locked.
