PART 4

Dominic played the worried husband until he thought Audrey was unconscious.

He leaned over her bed when nurses entered.

He asked careful questions.

He touched her hand when Doctor Reed explained the injuries.

He even cried once when the hospital administrator came by.

But the act cracked whenever he stepped behind the glass partition.

Audrey drifted in and out that first night.

Pain medicine blurred the ceiling lights.

Voices slipped through the room in pieces.

Victoria crying.

Paige whispering.

Dominic speaking low into his phone.

“She cannot sign now.”

Then later.

“No, the accounts are still under her name.”

Then.

“If she wakes up confused, we can still manage this.”

Audrey could not move.

But she could hear.

The next morning, Doctor Reed came alone.

He closed the door.

His expression was gentle in a way that made Audrey afraid.

He told her about the pregnancy.

Eight weeks.

Lost from trauma.

Audrey did not scream.

She wanted to.

Her body had no strength for it.

Instead, she asked for her phone.

Doctor Reed hesitated.

“You need rest.”

“I need my attorney.”

He gave it to her.

Audrey called Sophia.

The moment Sophia answered, Audrey said, “File.”

No greeting.

No explanation.

Sophia understood.

“The divorce?”

“All of it.”

“The asset freeze?”

“Yes.”

“The estate lockout?”

“Yes.”

“The criminal referral?”

Audrey looked toward the glass.

Dominic stood outside with Paige now.

Paige’s hand was on his chest.

His forehead touched hers.

They looked intimate.

Comfortable.

Practiced.

Audrey’s voice became almost calm.

“Yes.”

Sophia exhaled once.

“I am so sorry.”

Audrey closed her eyes.

“Do not be sorry.”

“Be fast.”

Sophia was fast.

Within twenty minutes, emergency filings went out.

Within thirty, banks received freeze instructions.

Within forty, Vale Meridian revoked Dominic’s access credentials.

Within fifty, the estate gates changed codes.

Within an hour, every asset Dominic thought he had married into became unreachable.

Then Dominic’s phone buzzed.

Audrey watched him read the first notification.

His face changed.

Then the second came.

Then the third.

Paige stepped back.

Dominic looked through the glass and saw Audrey watching.

For the first time, she smiled.

Not because she was happy.

May you like

Because he had finally understood there was a cost.
