Paige left Dominic before the police arrived.
Not because she suddenly became noble.
Because she finally understood he was dangerous to stand beside.
She stepped away from him in the hospital hallway.
“Was I supposed to be next?”
Dominic looked at her like she had betrayed him.
“Do not start.”
Paige laughed once.
It sounded terrified.
“You told me Audrey was unstable.”
He reached for her wrist.
She pulled back.
Doctor Reed saw it.
The security guard saw it too.
“Sir,” the guard said.
“Hands to yourself.”
Dominic’s face darkened.
Audrey watched through the glass.
It was strange how clear things became once love stopped translating cruelty.
Paige turned to Sophia, who had arrived in person with a leather folder and the cold expression of a woman preparing to ruin people legally.
“I have messages.”
Dominic snapped, “Paige.”
She looked at him.
“You said the assets would be yours after she recovered.”
Sophia’s eyes sharpened.
“Say that again.”
Paige swallowed.
“He said Audrey would sign once she realized she could not manage alone.”
Dominic lunged forward.
Security stopped him.
That movement ended whatever defense he thought he had.
Police arrived with quiet efficiency.
They spoke to Doctor Reed.
The nurse.
Hospital security.
Then Sophia gave them the estate footage preservation notice.
Victoria tried to leave through the private elevator.
She was stopped before the doors closed.
“Mrs. Hale, we need to speak with you.”
Victoria lifted her chin.
“My lawyer will be present.”
Sophia smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Audrey did not watch them take statements.
She turned away.
The baby was gone.
No arrest could change that.
No frozen account could bring back the heartbeat she never got to hear.
Doctor Reed sat beside her bed after everyone left.
“I can ask for a grief counselor.”
Audrey nodded.
Then whispered, “Will that make me feel like a mother?”
Doctor Reed’s eyes softened.
“You already are one.”
Audrey broke then.
Silently at first.
Then with the kind of sobs that make the body shake around injuries.
Sophia stood by the door and cried without wiping her face.
Outside, Dominic finally realized the empire he wanted was locked.
