Chapter 8 - Melissa’s offer

Thomas stopped his SUV fifty yards from the maintenance office.
Detective McKenna ordered him out with his hands visible.
He complied immediately.
“What is this?”
Adrian walked toward him.
“You tell us.”
Thomas saw Kerr.
His expression changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You’re alive.”
Kerr laughed bitterly.
“Disappointed?”
Thomas looked toward Lena.
“No.”
“You knew he was missing,” Lena said.
“I knew he disappeared.”
“You knew where?”
“No.”
“Then how did you find us?”
Thomas removed his phone.
“Kerr’s old emergency locator.”
Kerr stared.
“What?”
“Victor required senior legal officers to register emergency devices after the kidnapping threat in 2018.”
Noah checked.
The explanation was plausible.
Too plausible.
Thomas looked at Kerr.
“You kept the device?”
“I forgot it existed.”
“You said I took the black key,” Thomas continued. “Tell them the rest.”
Kerr lowered his eyes.
Lena turned.
“What rest?”
“Victor instructed Kerr to give it to me if anything happened.”
Thomas reached inside his jacket slowly.
McKenna raised her weapon.
Thomas froze.
“Inside pocket.”
She removed a black key.
The same shape as the one that fell from Victor’s cane.
Lena stared.
“You had it.”
“For eight months.”
“And lied.”
“I was following your father’s instructions.”
“His instructions were to hide it from me?”
“To wait.”
“For what?”
“Until someone came looking for the other three keys.”
Ryan had.
Thomas claimed Victor suspected someone would eventually force Lena to reveal the brass keys. The black key was the final safeguard.
“Why didn’t you tell me after Ryan attacked me?”
“I intended to.”
“When?”
“When I knew who else was involved.”
Noah crossed his arms.
“You keep saying that.”
Thomas looked at him.
“Because your father believed Ryan was being used.”
Kerr nodded reluctantly.
“Victor said the same.”
Adrian’s anger shifted.
“Used by whom?”
Neither man knew.
Or claimed not to.
The black key opened the final cabinet in Victor’s underground records room.
This time, they brought Detective McKenna.
Inside the cabinet were three items.
A portable encrypted drive.
A sealed envelope marked LENA.
And a printed list of numbered companies.
No explanation.
No confession.
No convenient answer.
Victor had left pieces.
Not conclusions.
Lena opened the envelope.
Inside was one sentence.
If Ryan asks for the keys, do not let anger make you underestimate fear.
She read it again.
Noah said, “Dad expected Ryan to ask.”
“Yes.”
“But he wanted Lena to ask why.”
Ethan connected the encrypted drive to an offline computer.
It requested four keys.
Three brass.
One black.
Each key had a small magnetic strip hidden along its side.
Together, they generated an access sequence.
The drive opened.
Most folders were encrypted again.
One was available.
NORTHSTAR.
Inside were transaction summaries matching Victor’s ledger.
But the final document was different.
A list of access timestamps.
Ryan.
Melissa.
Samuel Kerr.
Thomas Blackwell.
And one unidentified administrator listed only as ADMIN-0.
Lena looked at Thomas.
“You accessed Northstar.”
“So did your father.”
“Your name is there.”
“I reviewed it at his request.”
Samuel Kerr’s name appeared repeatedly after Victor’s death.
Ryan and Melissa appeared almost daily.
ADMIN-0 appeared only five times.
Each time immediately before a major action.
The forged collateral agreement.
The trust dissolution.
Victor’s home-server download.
Lena’s forced divorce filing.
And, most recently, three hours before Ryan attacked Lena.
Someone above Ryan had activated the operation that day.
Noah began tracing the admin signature.
The encryption was unusually sophisticated.
Then Lena’s phone rang.
Melissa.
Everyone went silent.
Lena answered.
“Where are you?”
Melissa was crying.
“You have the drive.”
Lena looked at Noah.
“How do you know?”
“Ryan knows Thomas went to the quarry.”
“Ryan sent people after Kerr?”
“Yes.”
“Where is Ryan?”
“I don’t know.”
“What do you want?”
“I want protection.”
“You watched him beat me.”
“I know.”
“You lied to police.”
“I know.”
“You were in my father’s study when he died.”
Silence.
“Melissa.”
“Yes.”
Lena’s voice stayed calm.
“Did Ryan kill my father?”
“No.”
Too fast.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Then tell me what happened.”
“I can’t over the phone.”
“You sound exactly like Kerr.”
“Because Ryan monitors everything.”
“What do you have?”
“A recording.”
Noah leaned closer.
Melissa continued.
“Your father recorded the confrontation. Ryan thought he deleted it. I copied it.”
“Why?”
“Insurance.”
“Against Ryan?”
“Against everyone.”
“Meet us.”
“No police.”
“That’s not your decision.”
“Then I disappear.”
Lena looked at McKenna.
The detective nodded once.
“Where?” Lena asked.
Melissa named a parking structure near Union Station.
“One hour.”
Before hanging up, Melissa whispered something.
“Lena?”
“What?”
“Ryan never wanted to divorce you.”
Lena frowned.
“He filed the papers.”
“That was the deadline strategy.”
“What does that mean?”
Melissa’s voice trembled.
“He needed you frightened enough to sign something else.”
The line went dead.
Lena looked at the Northstar file.
The divorce papers Ryan had thrown beside her were apparently only camouflage.

Whatever he truly wanted required Lena’s signature before Friday.
👉 Melissa offered a recording of Victor’s final confrontation—and revealed that Ryan’s divorce demand was only a distraction from the document he actually needed Lena to sign.
