Chapter 9 - the recording in Melissa’s purse

Melissa arrived twelve minutes late.

She wore dark glasses and a long coat over the silver dress she had worn at Lena’s house the previous night.

No luggage.

No lawyer.

No Ryan.

Detective McKenna watched from an unmarked car one level below.

Adrian and Ethan remained nearby.

Noah monitored every exit through the parking cameras.

Lena waited beside Thomas.

Melissa stopped when she saw him.

“You brought him.”

Thomas’s expression tightened.

“Good to see you too.”

“Don’t pretend.”

“Pretend what?”

“That you weren’t part of this.”

Lena stepped between them.

“The recording.”

Melissa removed a small drive from her purse.

“Protection first.”

“You helped Ryan forge my signature.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about him attacking me.”

“Yes.”

“You helped create Northstar.”

“I helped with the banking structure. I didn’t create it.”

“Who did?”

“I never knew.”

“ADMIN-0?”

Melissa looked sharply at her.

“You opened Victor’s drive.”

“Yes.”

Fear moved across Melissa’s face.

“Then we’re already late.”

“For what?”

“Northstar isn’t just a takeover.”

“What is it?”

Melissa looked toward Thomas.

“He knows.”

Thomas shook his head.

“I know Victor’s version.”

Melissa laughed.

“Victor’s version was the trap.”

Everyone went still.

She gave Lena the drive.

The recording began with Victor’s voice.

“You accessed my daughter’s shares.”

Ryan answered.

“She authorized household finance.”

“Not corporate collateral.”

“She’ll sign.”

“No.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I know my daughter.”

A second voice.

Melissa.

“Ryan, this is getting out of control.”

Victor said, “You should have thought of that before you moved twenty-eight million dollars.”

Then Kerr.

“We can reverse the trust dissolution.”

Ryan’s voice became sharper.

“You reverse anything and Northstar triggers.”

Victor replied, “Good.”

Silence followed.

Lena looked at Noah’s laptop.

“Good?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

The recording continued.

Ryan sounded confused too.

“What does that mean?”

Victor laughed once.

“You thought Northstar belonged to you?”

A chair scraped.

“Thomas said—”

Thomas suddenly looked up.

The audio cut beneath a burst of static.

Then returned.

Victor was breathing heavily.

Melissa said, “Mr. Hale?”

Ryan: “Sit down.”

Victor: “Get away from me.”

Another voice appeared.

Too distorted to identify.

A man.

He said:

“Victor, give them the key.”

Thomas stared at the speaker.

“That isn’t me.”

Melissa looked at him.

“I know.”

“Who?”

“I never saw him.”

“You were in the room.”

“The voice came through Ryan’s phone.”

Lena’s pulse accelerated.

ADMIN-0.

Victor continued.

“Tell your employer Northstar dies with me.”

The unknown voice answered:

“That was never the plan.”

Then came a crash.

Victor gasped.

Melissa shouted.

Kerr said, “Call an ambulance.”

Ryan: “Wait.”

“Ryan!”

“Wait!”

The recording became chaotic.

Seven seconds passed.

Victor struggled to breathe.

The unknown voice remained on the phone.

“Find the key first.”

Lena stopped the recording.

Her hands were shaking.

Ryan had delayed calling for help.

Not because he panicked.

Because someone instructed him to search for the key.

“Did he touch Dad?” she asked.

Melissa’s eyes filled with tears.

“No. Victor collapsed during the argument. Ryan didn’t cause the cardiac event.”

“But he delayed calling 911.”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Too long.”

“Why didn’t you call?”

Melissa looked ashamed.

“Ryan had my phone.”

“You had legs.”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“The person on the call.”

Thomas leaned toward her.

“Who was it?”

“I never knew his name.”

“Man or woman?”

“Man.”

“Accent?”

“American.”

“Age?”

“Older than Ryan.”

“Anything else?”

Melissa nodded slowly.

“Ryan called him Chairman once.”

Thomas stepped back.

Adrian entered from the stairwell.

“What?”

Melissa looked at Thomas.

“I thought it meant you.”

Thomas’s face hardened.

“I was chairman.”

“That’s why I believed it.”

“But?”

“Ryan met this man twice at the bank. Private room. No cameras. I never saw him directly.”

Lena asked the question that mattered.

“Why did Ryan attack me yesterday?”

Melissa removed a second document from her purse.

It resembled the divorce agreement.

Same paper.

Same law-firm logo.

But page thirty-two contained a separate authorization.

TRANSFER OF PERSONAL VOTING PROXY.

Lena read it.

If signed, Ryan would receive temporary voting authority over her Hale shares for ninety days.

Enough to survive the Northstar default.

Enough to influence Friday’s board vote.

“The divorce papers were hiding this inside the signature packet,” Melissa said.

“He wanted me to sign without reading.”

“Yes.”

“Why the keys?”

“Because Victor’s trust can invalidate the proxy.”

Thomas looked toward the encrypted drive.

“The protective trust.”

Melissa nodded.

“Victor didn’t dissolve it.”

Noah looked confused.

“We have dissolution documents.”

“Decoys.”

“Where is the real trust?”

Melissa pointed at the drive.

“Northstar.”

Victor had not merely discovered the scheme.

He had built a legal trap around it.

The name meant two different things.

Ryan believed Northstar was the takeover.

Victor had quietly converted it into the mechanism that would expose whoever activated it.

Thomas looked stunned.

“Victor never told me.”

Melissa looked at him.

“He didn’t trust you enough.”

Before Thomas could respond, Noah’s phone alarmed.

“Someone accessed the drive remotely.”

“That’s impossible,” Ethan said. “It’s offline.”

“No. They accessed a mirrored server Dad linked to it.”

A new file appeared.

BOARD VOTE ACCELERATED.

TIME: 9:00 A.M. TOMORROW.

The unknown administrator had moved Friday’s vote forward by two days.

They had less than eighteen hours.

Then another message appeared.

ADMIN-0: THOMAS BLACKWELL AUTHENTICATION ACCEPTED.

Everyone looked at Thomas.

He stared at the screen in disbelief.

May you like

“I didn’t do that.”

👉 Victor’s recording proved Ryan delayed emergency help while obeying an unseen “Chairman,” and now ADMIN-0 was using Thomas Blackwell’s identity to accelerate the takeover.
