Chapter 10 - the voice on Eleanor’s phone

Police obtained Eleanor’s call records.
Most numbers were ordinary.
Doctors.
Banks.
Andrew.
Vale.
One prepaid number appeared repeatedly during the five days Michael was in Denver.
Seven calls.
No subscriber.
No billing identity.
No location history beyond several towers around Chicago.
The final call occurred forty-three minutes before Michael entered the kitchen.
Detective Walsh recovered a voicemail Eleanor had failed to delete.
A woman’s voice.
Calm.
Educated.
Older.
“Stop hesitating, Eleanor. Thomas hesitated and look where it got him. If Clara controls Michael, Lily controls the company. You lose everything.”
Michael listened twice.
“Do you recognize her?” Walsh asked.
“No.”
Andrew shook his head too.
Clara listened from her hospital room.
Her expression changed.
“I do.”
Michael turned.
“Who?”
“I don’t know her name.”
“But you’ve heard her?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
Clara took a slow breath.
“Two months ago. Eleanor had a visitor.”
Michael stared.
“At our house?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I thought she was one of Eleanor’s friends.”
“What did she look like?”
“Early sixties. Blond-gray hair. Very elegant.”
“Did you hear what they discussed?”
“Only part.”
Clara closed her eyes, reconstructing the memory.
“The woman asked whether Lily still slept with the rag doll.”
Michael went still.
“Rosie?”
“Yes.”
That changed everything.
This woman knew about Thomas’s evidence.
She wasn’t only involved in the current plan.
She knew what Thomas had hidden years earlier.
Detective Walsh searched Thomas’s files for women connected to Vale.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Susan Keller.
The widow from Milwaukee whose family estate had been targeted through a similar guardianship scheme.
But Susan would now be around fifty, not sixty.
Another name surfaced.
Charlotte Vale.
Martin Vale’s older sister.
Former probate attorney.
Officially retired.
Michael stared at her photograph.
Clara immediately pointed.
“That’s her.”
Charlotte Vale.
Michael’s biological aunt.
The woman who visited Eleanor.
The voice pushing her to remove Clara.
Detective Walsh located Charlotte’s suburban home.
Empty.
Closets cleared.
Computer gone.
Car missing.
But investigators found one thing in the fireplace.
Partially burned paper.
Thomas Carter’s name.
A photograph was reconstructed from fragments.
Thomas standing outside a restaurant with Charlotte.
Date:
Three weeks before his death.
Michael stared.
“Dad met her.”
Sarah examined the files.
“Maybe he was investigating the Vale family.”
Walsh found another fragment.
A handwritten sentence from Thomas.
CHARLOTTE WANTS OUT. SAYS MARTIN DOESN’T KNOW THE ORIGINAL DEAL.
Michael frowned.
“Original deal?”
Nobody knew.
Then Walsh’s team recovered a deleted email from Thomas.
Recipient:
Charlotte Vale.
Subject:
MICHAEL.
Thomas wrote:
I kept my promise for thirty years. You told me Martin would never learn the boy was his. Now you are both circling my family. If Eleanor told him, this ends now.
Michael read it slowly.
“So Martin didn’t always know I was his son.”
Sarah nodded.
“It appears Eleanor told him later.”
Andrew asked:
“Why hide it?”
Michael kept reading.
Another email.
Thomas:
You said Martin was dangerous when Michael was born. I believed you. I raised that boy as my own and would do it again. But if you helped Eleanor bring Martin back into his life, I will expose everything.
Charlotte responded:
I didn’t bring Martin back.
Eleanor did.
Michael felt a strange mixture of anger and gratitude toward Thomas.
His father had protected him from a truth he believed dangerous.
Then the detective recovered Charlotte’s final reply.
Three days before Thomas died.
You still do not understand.
Martin was never the reason we hid Michael.
Michael looked up.
“Then who was?”
The email contained no answer.
But attached was a photograph.
A younger Eleanor holding infant Michael.
Beside her stood Martin Vale.
And behind them—
another man.
Tall.
Dark suit.
Hand resting possessively on Eleanor’s shoulder.
Thomas had circled his face.
Beneath it he wrote:
THIS IS WHO CHARLOTTE FEARS.
Michael stared at the stranger.
Then Andrew whispered:
“I’ve seen him.”
Michael turned.
“Where?”
Andrew looked terrified.
May you like
“At Dad’s funeral.”
👉 Thomas’s files revealed that someone more dangerous than Martin Vale had been connected to Michael since infancy—and that same man quietly attended Thomas Carter’s funeral.
