Chapter 6 - Thomas Carter’s warning

The video opened with darkness.

Then Thomas Carter’s face appeared.

Michael stopped breathing for a second.

His father looked older than Michael remembered.

Tired.

Afraid.

The camera sat low, probably hidden on a bookshelf.

Thomas spoke quietly.

“If Michael ever sees this, then I waited too long.”

Andrew lowered his head.

Clara watched from her hospital room through a secure screen.

Thomas continued.

“Eleanor has been pressuring me to approve the Lake Arden sale.”

Michael glanced toward Sarah.

Lake Arden was the most valuable Carter property.

Martin Vale’s company wanted it.

“I refused because the buyer isn’t what he claims.”

Thomas looked over his shoulder.

“Vale Strategic Partners is only the visible company.”

The video skipped.

Footsteps.

Eleanor entered the room.

“Who are you talking to?”

“No one.”

“Then sign the papers.”

Thomas stared at her.

“I said no.”

“You’re being stubborn.”

“I’m protecting my sons.”

“From what? Becoming wealthy?”

“From Martin.”

Eleanor’s expression changed.

Michael noticed immediately.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Thomas continued.

“I know what he did in Milwaukee.”

Eleanor stepped closer.

“Lower your voice.”

“What happened to Susan Keller?”

Eleanor went still.

Michael looked at Detective Walsh.

“Who is Susan Keller?”

Walsh shook her head.

“We’re checking.”

On-screen, Eleanor whispered:

“That has nothing to do with us.”

“It has everything to do with us.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Thomas stood.

“I know Martin falsified guardianship documents after her husband died.”

Michael felt Clara’s eyes on him through the monitor.

Thomas continued.

“And I know you helped him contact Andrew.”

Andrew whispered:

“Oh God.”

Michael turned.

“You knew?”

“No.”

In the video, Thomas pointed toward Eleanor.

“You will not use my sons.”

Eleanor’s voice hardened.

“They’re my sons too.”

“Then act like their mother.”

She slapped him.

Andrew covered his mouth.

Michael’s expression turned cold.

Thomas did not retaliate.

He simply looked at Eleanor with something that resembled grief.

“You’ve changed.”

Eleanor replied:

“No. I finally stopped pretending.”

The recording ended seconds later.

Michael stared at the blank screen.

“That’s it?”

The technician shook his head.

“There’s a damaged segment at the end.”

“Can you recover it?”

“Possibly.”

Detective Walsh had already begun investigating Susan Keller.

What they found made the room colder.

Susan had been married to an older real-estate developer in Milwaukee.

After his death, a family dispute erupted over approximately forty million dollars in property holdings.

Susan was briefly declared medically incompetent after relatives alleged she had become unstable.

A temporary guardian took control.

Within months, much of the property had been sold.

The attorney who represented the acquiring company:

Martin Vale.

Michael stared at the report.

“And Dad found this.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to Susan?”

Walsh hesitated.

“She disappeared after the guardianship order was overturned.”

“Disappeared?”

“No confirmed address for seven years.”

Clara spoke from the monitor.

“What does that have to do with us?”

Sarah answered.

“The pattern.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Create evidence that a family member is unstable. Obtain temporary control. Push through an asset transaction before the family can challenge it.”

Michael thought about Clara.

The staged photographs.

Her old mental-health records.

The locked pantry.

Lily crying.

Michael supposedly becoming overwhelmed.

Eleanor prepared as guardian.

The land sale.

Vale.

Andrew whispered:

“Mom was doing the same thing.”

Walsh nodded.

“Possibly.”

Andrew’s face turned pale.

“But poisoning Clara and Lily wasn’t part of Vale’s plan.”

Michael stared.

“How do you know?”

Andrew swallowed.

“Because he told Mom never to hurt Lily.”

Everyone went silent.

Michael stood.

“You spoke to Vale?”

Andrew’s answer was barely audible.

“Yes.”

“How many times?”

“A few.”

Michael moved toward him.

“What did he tell you?”

Andrew stepped backward.

“That he only needed the family under pressure.”

“What does that mean?”

“He said once you believed Clara couldn’t cope, you’d sign the restructuring to keep the company stable.”

“And Mom?”

“She wanted more.”

Michael’s voice dropped.

“More what?”

“Control.”

Andrew looked toward Clara’s screen.

“She hated that Dad put Lily’s trust ahead of her.”

Clara whispered:

“She hated me before that.”

Andrew didn’t deny it.

Detective Walsh’s phone rang.

She listened.

Then turned toward Michael.

“We found Martin Vale.”

“Where?”

“At O’Hare.”

“Leaving?”

“He had a ticket to London.”

Michael’s jaw tightened.

“Arrest him.”

“We need charges first.”

Then Walsh received another message.

Her expression changed.

“What?” Michael asked.

“Our team searched Vale’s office.”

“And?”

“They found a folder with your wife’s name.”

Clara went still.

Walsh continued.

“And another with Lily’s.”

Michael felt his pulse hammer.

“What’s in Lily’s?”

Walsh looked at him.

“A draft petition asking a court to remove her from both parents.”

👉 Martin Vale had already prepared legal papers to separate Lily from Michael and Clara, proving the plan extended far beyond a family argument over money.
