Chapter 9 - why Vale wanted Michael’s signature

Michael read the birth certificate until the letters seemed unreal.
Martin Vale.
His biological father.
A man he barely knew.
A man now connected to Eleanor’s money.
Thomas’s suspicious final years.
Clara’s abuse.
Lily’s guardianship papers.
Andrew sat several feet away.
“So he’s your father.”
Michael shook his head.
“No.”
Andrew frowned.
“The document—”
“Thomas was my father.”
Andrew nodded.
He understood.
Biology could explain a history.
It could not rewrite a lifetime.
Detective Walsh asked Martin Vale directly.
His lawyer advised silence.
But Vale made one mistake.
When shown a photograph of six-year-old Michael, his expression changed before he could control it.
Recognition.
Sarah began reconstructing the family history.
Eleanor had been nineteen when Michael was born.
Thomas met her several years later.
He adopted Michael after marrying her.
Martin Vale was twenty-eight at Michael’s birth and already married to someone else.
He later built his investment empire.
For decades, there appeared to be no contact.
Until four years before Thomas died.
Then payments began.
Michael stared at Eleanor’s account history.
“Why come back?”
Sarah looked toward the company records.
“Possibly because of the Carter property.”
Andrew shook his head.
“Vale was richer than us.”
“Then maybe the property wasn’t the point.”
Detective Walsh entered with the answer.
“Lake Arden isn’t ordinary land.”
Michael frowned.
“It’s warehouses and undeveloped acreage.”
“Most of it.”
Walsh placed an environmental survey on the table.
“Thomas commissioned this privately six years ago.”
Michael read.
Underground rights.
Industrial mineral deposits.
Infrastructure access.
The property sat above a corridor considered strategically valuable for a major data-and-energy development.
Vale’s offer had dramatically undervalued it.
“How valuable?”
Sarah answered quietly.
“Potentially hundreds of millions if the development plans proceed.”
Andrew sat down.
“Oh God.”
Vale wasn’t rescuing the family company.
He was attempting to buy its most valuable asset before Michael understood what it was worth.
Thomas discovered it.
Refused.
Then began investigating Vale.
Michael asked:
“Why did Dad leave Lily the controlling trust shares?”
Sarah looked at Thomas’s estate letter.
“Because he didn’t trust either adult son to be immune from pressure.”
Andrew winced.
Michael continued reading.
Thomas believed Michael’s marriage to Clara created the most stable branch of the family.
He placed Lily’s future ahead of immediate sale.
The trust forced decisions to slow down.
Vale needed that obstacle removed.
Clara made to appear unfit.
Michael pressured.
Lily placed under Eleanor’s guardianship.
Andrew financially trapped.
One transaction.
Entire family bypassed.
Andrew covered his face.
“He used all of us.”
Michael stared.
“Mom helped him.”
That truth remained.
Detective Walsh had another discovery.
Martin Vale’s London ticket had not been for escape.
A second ticket existed.
Eleanor Carter.
Same flight.
Booked three weeks earlier.
Michael felt cold.
“She planned to leave after the sale.”
“Yes.”
“And leave Clara what?”
Walsh didn’t answer.
Because they didn’t yet know.
The toxicology investigation finally clarified part of the kitchen incident.
The exposure had come from a concentrated pesticide product used improperly around the pantry and floor.
Investigators could not yet prove whether Eleanor intended lethal harm.
But they could prove she had knowingly created a dangerous environment and blocked Clara’s attempt to remove Lily.
Michael cared less about the legal distinction than the fact that his wife and daughter had nearly died.
Then the second memory card produced another audio recording.
Eleanor and Vale.
Vale’s voice was unmistakable.
“Do not touch the child.”
Eleanor:
“I know.”
“Do not injure Clara.”
“I know.”
“We need instability, not a hospital.”
Eleanor:
“She won’t cooperate.”
“Then frighten Michael another way.”
The recording ended.
Michael stared.
Vale had designed the fraudulent guardianship scheme.
But he had specifically told Eleanor not to hurt Clara or Lily.
That did not absolve him.
But it changed the poisoning.
Eleanor had escalated alone.
Or with someone else.
Andrew suddenly remembered something.
“The day before they collapsed, Mom received a call.”
“From Vale?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“She put it on speaker for a second.”
“Who was it?”
“A woman.”
Michael frowned.
“What did she say?”
Andrew stared toward the second memory card.
“She told Mom, ‘Thomas was right. Michael will never sign while Clara is standing beside him.’”
Everyone went silent.
Vale had not been the only person advising Eleanor.
A woman knew Thomas’s warning.
Knew Michael’s family.
Knew the land deal.

And believed Clara had to be removed.
👉 A second conspirator—an unidentified woman—appeared to have pushed Eleanor beyond Vale’s original scheme and directly targeted Clara.
