Chapter 10

No one showed revenge violence.
No divorce papers appeared on the marble counter.
No bank accounts were frozen.
No prison sentence was announced.
No future romance replaced the horror inside the kitchen.
Margaret remained in her wheelchair, exhausted and shaken, with Jade standing protectively beside her.
Allison stood near the island in her satin robe, confidence collapsing one breath at a time.
The wooden spoon lay far across the counter, out of reach.
Ryder stood between them with his phone in his hand and the security footage frozen on the screen.
The image did not reveal the accomplice’s face.
Only the outline.
The hand.
The dark sleeve.
The familiar ring catching a faint glint of light as the figure entered Margaret’s room behind Allison.
Ryder looked at the hallway.
Then at Allison.
Then at the hidden camera above the cabinet.
Every detail of the house felt different now.
The locked room.
The missed messages.
The canceled therapists.
The suppressed alerts.
The deleted clips.
Jade’s failed warnings.
Margaret’s fear of being sent away.
Allison’s confidence.
Someone else had helped build the cage.
Someone who knew the mansion.
Someone who knew the security system.
Someone who knew enough about Ryder’s absence to act while he was half a world away.
Ryder slowly raised his eyes toward Allison.
His voice was quiet, but the entire kitchen seemed to hear it.
“Then who else was helping you?”
Allison’s lips parted.
No words came.
Jade held Margaret closer.
Margaret closed her eyes as if the question itself hurt.
The warm light gleamed across the marble floor, the overturned wheelchair marks, the abandoned suitcase near the doorway.
Ryder looked once more at the frozen image on his phone.
The hidden figure remained faceless.
Unidentified.
Waiting inside the truth.

And Ryder Whitaker finally understood that his wife had not simply abused his mother in secret.
She had help.
