Chapter 5

The hidden cameras were Ryder’s idea.

Not for spying.

For safety.

After Margaret’s first fall, he installed discreet cameras in common areas, hallways, and exterior entrances so he could verify emergencies if the home alarm triggered. Bedrooms had privacy restrictions, but hallway views and door sensors captured enough to reconstruct movement.

Allison hated them.

“These make the house feel like a prison,” she said when they were installed.

Ryder offered to disable the kitchen camera.

Margaret told him not to.

“If I fall near the stove, I want someone to know before I become a headline,” she said.

So the cameras stayed.

Over time, Ryder stopped checking them.

The alerts went to his phone, but refinery emergencies trained him to ignore noncritical notifications. Allison also said motion alerts bothered her during the night, so he adjusted sensitivity and gave her some admin permissions.

Now he regretted every convenience he had granted.

He opened the security archive.

Allison took one step toward him.

“Ryder, don’t.”

He looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because you’re about to misunderstand weeks of caregiving.”

Jade spoke quietly.

“Start with last Thursday.”

Allison’s eyes snapped to her.

Ryder tapped the date.

The phone loaded.

The screen showed Margaret’s hallway.

No readable interface text.

Just the silent footage.

Margaret’s bedroom door opened slightly.

Allison entered carrying a tray.

Minutes later, she came out without the tray.

Then another figure appeared.

Tall enough to be adult.

Dark clothing.

Face turned away from the camera.

The figure entered Margaret’s room.

Ryder’s thumb froze over the screen.

“Who is that?”

Allison said nothing.

Jade’s voice trembled.

“That’s why I started locking my own door.”

Ryder looked from Jade to Allison.

“You knew someone else was coming into my mother’s room?”

Allison’s jaw tightened.

“I don’t know what you think you’re seeing.”

“I see someone entering her room while I was overseas.”

“It could be staff.”

“Then name them.”

Silence.

The warm kitchen suddenly felt airless.
