Chapter 2

Ryder had been gone eight months.

Saudi Arabia had been supposed to take four.

A refinery expansion outside Jubail became delay after delay, inspection after inspection, emergency after emergency. Every extra month made him feel guilty, but Allison always insisted she had everything under control.

“Your mother is fine,” she said on video calls.

“Jade helps with the house.”

“Don’t worry about us.”

Ryder wanted to believe her.

His mother, Margaret, was proud and stubborn. After her second fall, she reluctantly moved into the McLean mansion with Ryder and Allison. She hated needing the wheelchair. Hated asking for help. Hated feeling like a guest in the house her son had bought partly so she would never feel unsafe again.

At first, Allison performed kindness beautifully.

Fresh flowers in Margaret’s room.

Special tea.

Soft blankets.

Caregivers interviewed, then dismissed because “Jade can manage the basics.”

Ryder offered to hire full-time medical care from overseas.

Allison refused.

“She doesn’t want strangers around,” she said. “Trust me.”

So he did.

That was the mistake that now burned through him.

The warning signs had been small.

Margaret missing scheduled calls.

Allison saying she was asleep.

Jade answering once and going silent when Allison entered the room.

A message from his mother that said only: Come home soon.

When Ryder called immediately, Allison answered Margaret’s phone.

“She’s emotional today,” she said lightly. “You know how she gets.”

Ryder changed his return date that night.

He told no one.

Not Allison.

Not the staff.

Not even his assistant.

He landed at Dulles before sunrise, drove straight to McLean, and entered through the side door with his suitcase in hand.

He expected to hear breakfast noise.

Maybe Allison’s surprise.

Maybe his mother’s voice.

Instead, he heard Margaret crying.

Then Jade shouting, “Stop!”

Then the wooden chair scraping against marble.

Ryder dropped the suitcase and ran.

What he found in the kitchen was not an argument.

It was the end of every excuse Allison had built while he was away.
