Chapter 1

Husband Scalds His Wife Over a Bank Card—Then She Returns With Police and Leaves Her Wedding Ring Behind.
When I walked back into my Miami apartment with two police officers behind me, Derek looked more offended than afraid.
That told me everything.
He stepped out of the bedroom doorway in his gray suit, shirt open at the collar, face tightening the moment he saw Officer Grant Miller behind my left shoulder and Officer Owen Price standing near the door.
My torn cream dress still smelled faintly of coffee.
The left side of my face was red beneath small medical bandages.
I held the thick medical report folder against my chest because my hands needed something to grip.
On the floor near the dining table lay the broken coffee mug.
The spill had dried into a dark stain.
Derek stared at the officers.
Then at me.
“You called the police on me?”
I slowly turned my injured cheek toward him.
Not to make him feel guilty.
Derek did not feel guilt unless it cost him something.
“You burned me for a bank card.”
His jaw tightened.
Before he could answer, Suzanne came out of the kitchen in her white tweed jacket, silver heels clicking against the floor like she owned the place.
She pointed toward my handbag near the dining table.
“That card belongs to family.”
Officer Price stepped slightly forward when she moved toward me.
I walked past her without flinching and placed the medical folder on the table beside the broken mug.
Then I removed my wedding ring.
Slowly.
Carefully.
I set it on top of the folder.
“Then your family can pay its own bills.”
Derek took one sharp step forward.
Officer Miller raised one hand.
“This apartment belongs to her. Step back.”
Derek froze.
For the first time, he looked around.
Really looked.
My computer was gone.
My valuables were gone.
My documents were gone.
My personal things were gone.
My apartment keys lay beside the wedding ring.
Derek lifted his electronic key fob and pressed it.
Nothing.
No light.
No sound.
No control.
His face changed as he looked from the failed key fob to me.
And I realized he had never feared losing me.
May you like
He feared learning he had never owned me.
