Chapter 5

Derek tried to perform innocence when we entered.
He looked at Officer Miller first.
Then at Officer Price.
Then at me, as if waiting for me to apologize for bringing witnesses into his home.
His home.
That was how he always thought of it, though his name had never been on the deed, the lease, the insurance policy, the utilities, or the ownership documents for anything that mattered inside.
But Derek believed presence created ownership.
He had slept there.
Entertained there.
Let his sister use the pool.
Hosted clients beside my windows.
That was enough in his mind.
“You called the police on me?” he asked.
Not, Are you okay?
Not, I’m sorry.
Not, I lost control.
The betrayal, to him, was that I had made the truth official.
I turned my cheek toward him and spoke evenly.
“You burned me for a bank card.”
Suzanne entered like a woman offended by consequences arriving during business hours.
Her eyes moved from my bandages to the officers.
Then to the handbag near the table.
“That card belongs to family.”
There it was again.
Family as a password.
Family as an invoice.
Family as a hand reaching into my life and calling resistance selfish.
I walked past her and placed the medical report on the dining table.
Right beside the broken coffee mug.
Derek’s eyes dropped to the folder.
He understood what it was before he touched it.
Medical report.
Photographs.
Statement.
Timeline.
He reached toward it.
Officer Miller’s voice stopped him.
“Do not touch that unless she permits it.”
Derek’s hand froze.
The apartment went silent.
That was the first time I saw the shape of his panic.
Not fear of what he had done.
Fear that he was no longer allowed to handle the evidence of it.
Suzanne crossed her arms.
“This is ridiculous.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
Then I removed my wedding ring.
Her expression shifted.
Derek whispered, “Skylar.”
I set the ring on top of the folder.
The sound was small.
