Chapter 10

I did not leave dramatically.

That was important.

No slammed door.

No shouting.

No final speech that would let Derek pretend we were both out of control.

I gathered the medical folder, leaving the wedding ring on the table.

The apartment keys stayed beside it.

The broken mug stayed where it was.

The dried coffee stayed visible on the floor.

Some scenes should not be cleaned too quickly.

Officer Miller remained at my side.

Officer Price stayed near the doorway, quiet and watchful.

Suzanne stood frozen near the dining table, white purse clutched against her ribs, finally looking less entitled than uncertain.

Derek stared at the ring.

Then at the failed key fob.

Then at the nearly empty living room.

My absence had already moved through the apartment before my body did.

The computer he thought he could use.

Gone.

The documents he thought he could search.

Gone.

The valuables he thought proved shared success.

Gone.

The bank card he thought belonged to family.

Frozen beyond his reach.

The home he thought his presence had conquered.

Still mine.

Officer Miller looked at Derek one final time.

“Step back.”

This time, Derek obeyed without speaking.

That was when I knew he understood.

Not the law fully.

Not the consequences.

Not the future.

Only the first terrible fact.

The apartment and everything inside it had never been under his control.

I walked toward the door slowly because my body was exhausted and my cheek still burned.

But I did not feel weak.

Weak was staying silent so Derek could feel strong.

Weak was pretending Suzanne’s entitlement was family.

Weak was calling a scalding an accident because the truth would make dinner awkward.

This was not weakness.

This was evidence walking out.

At the doorway, Derek said my name once.

“Skylar.”

I stopped.

Not because he called.

Because the woman who used to answer deserved to hear the silence that came after.

Then I stepped into the hallway with the officers beside me.

Behind me, my wedding ring remained on the medical folder beside the broken mug.

A small circle of gold left exactly where the lie ended.
