Chapter 18 - THE TWO ANNAS
The woman refused to leave the theater until an independent attorney arrived.
That decision made Marcus pause.
Olivia’s agents usually demanded secrecy and private control.
This woman demanded outside representation.
Her fingerprints matched old Vale records, but the archive contained inconsistent prints for Anna across different years.
The inconsistency had once been dismissed as poor scanning.
Now it suggested two women had alternated under one identity.
The woman identified herself as Annabelle Vale.
Her twin was Ana Vale.
Their father, Theodore, called both daughters Anna in public because he believed identical branding made the family appear unified after their mother died.
Official documents gradually merged the names.
Annabelle became A.V.-1.
Ana became A.V.-2.
“Which one wore the ring Maya has?” Grace asked.
“Ana.”
Maya stared at the woman through the live interview screen.
“The woman who raised me was Ana?”
“Yes.”
“Was she my biological mother?”
Annabelle closed her eyes.
“No.”
Maya did not look away.
“Then you are?”
“Yes.”
A genetic test could verify biology.
It could not determine motherhood by itself.
Ana had raised Maya, protected her, given her the ring, and died believing the child should know the truth.
Annabelle claimed Olivia separated them shortly after Maya’s birth.
Annabelle had become pregnant during a relationship Theodore considered socially damaging. He wanted the baby raised inside the family but feared scandal.
Ana agreed to serve publicly as the mother while Annabelle completed treatment for severe postpartum complications.
The arrangement was supposed to last three months.
Olivia discovered the merged birth records and recognized an opportunity.
She told Annabelle that the baby died.
She told Ana that Annabelle had surrendered all parental rights and disappeared.
Ana raised Maya.
Annabelle remained in a private Vale clinic under a psychiatric guardianship signed by Charles Hale.
“Why didn’t you contact us when you recovered?” Maya asked.
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Every year.”
“Through whom?”
“Olivia.”
Maya’s expression hardened.
“You knew Olivia controlled the guardianship.”
“I was told she also controlled your location and would harm you if I broke the agreement.”
“You accepted her as the only route.”
“I had no legal name outside the facility.”
“That explains the trap.”
Maya’s voice remained steady.
“It does not make twenty years disappear.”
Annabelle nodded.
“No.”
Cora sat in a separate room with a child advocate. She said Vanessa found her at a private apartment where Dr. Price visited weekly.
The woman caring for her called herself Miss Helen.
She taught Cora to answer to Lily during medical appointments.
At home, she called her Cora.
“Did you know Lily existed?” the advocate asked.
“Yes.”
“What were you told?”
“That she had my life because Maya chose the wrong baby.”
“Did you believe that?”
“Sometimes.”
“Do you want to meet her?”
Cora shook her head.
“Not now.”
The answer was respected.
No one arranged a dramatic sister photograph.
Genetic testing established that Cora was Annabelle’s biological granddaughter through stored reproductive tissue.
The paternal material belonged to Richard.
Maya felt the betrayal move through her body before she understood the timeline.
Richard’s cheek swab had been used.
Dr. Price combined it with Annabelle’s stored egg years before Richard married Maya.
Cora was genetically Richard’s daughter.
She was not Maya’s child.
Olivia had created a future heir linking the Hales to the Vale bloodline without allowing Maya any parental authority.
Richard heard the result in a monitored legal consultation.
He began crying.
“I never consented to a child.”
“You consented to a test without reading what your mother attached,” the prosecutor said.
“That is not reproductive consent.”
“No.”
The distinction mattered.
Richard had not chosen Cora’s conception.
He had still provided a sample inside Olivia’s secret program and ignored the paperwork because he expected personal advantage.
His victimization in this act did not erase his violence against Maya.
His violence did not erase the violation committed against him and Cora.
Olivia denied knowing Dr. Price performed the procedure.
The payment files contradicted her.
She authorized embryo storage and wrote:
RESERVE CHILD FOR PHASE TWO.
Vanessa revealed why she had followed the woman before the wedding.
Olivia paid Helen to raise Cora until Maya could be identified. If Maya proved controllable, Cora would remain hidden.
If Maya resisted, the child would be introduced as Richard’s rightful daughter and Lily’s replacement in the Hale trust.
Vanessa originally filmed Cora’s training sessions.
“She was four,” Maya said.
“I know.”
“You recorded adults teaching her to take another child’s name.”
“Yes.”
“Why stop now?”
“Because after the cake, Olivia sent a final instruction.”
Vanessa handed Marcus a paper she had taken from Helen’s apartment.
TRANSFER CORA INTO MAYA’S HOUSE AFTER LILY IS REMOVED.
Cora was not supposed to inherit beside Lily.
She was supposed to occupy the child’s place after custody proceedings separated Maya from her daughter.
Maya looked at Vanessa.
“You helped build that plan.”
“Yes.”
“You also stopped the transfer.”
“Yes.”
“Both will be recorded.”
Vanessa accepted the answer.
The forensic team opened Cora’s white rabbit.
Inside was a note written by Ana—the woman who raised Maya.
If Annabelle ever appears with a child, do not ask which woman is the real Anna.
Ask which sister signed Charles Hale’s guardianship.
Annabelle read the note.
Her face lost color.
“I did.”
“You signed your own guardianship?” Grace asked.
“No.”
Annabelle looked toward Maya.
