Chapter 6 - JULIAN’S PROMISE TO ANNA
Julian did not deny the agreement.
Twenty years earlier, he had been a young attorney at the firm representing Theodore Vale. Anna approached him after discovering Charles Hale’s false vendors.
She believed the senior partners were loyal to Charles.
Julian was the only lawyer who copied her documents before they disappeared.
When Anna fled Long Island, she asked him to locate her daughter if anything prevented her from making a claim herself.
In return, she promised him one percent of any stolen money he recovered for the trust.
“One percent of more than a billion dollars,” Maya said.
“Not the principal. Only verified misappropriated funds returned through my work.”
“That could still be millions.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I feared you would believe the search was only about money.”
“Was it?”
“At first, partly. Then I saw what Olivia had done to your mother’s name. I wanted to correct my own silence.”
Maya stood near the window.
A man could feel guilt and still profit from repairing the harm he failed to stop.
Again, the truth refused to divide neatly.
Grace reviewed Anna’s agreement independently. It was legal but revocable by Maya once she became recognized beneficiary.
Julian offered to waive it completely.
Maya did not accept immediately.
“I don’t want another person proving loyalty by making an emotional promise in a difficult room.”
“What do you want?”
“A written fee reviewed by independent counsel. Reasonable payment for actual work. No percentage of my inheritance.”
Julian nodded.
“That is fair.”
It was the first negotiation in Maya’s new life where she controlled the terms without being accused of ingratitude.
The trust bank completed preliminary identity recognition. Maya received limited standing to inspect Vale Orchid Holdings, though full voting authority required a court ruling.
The inspection exposed years of related-party contracts.
Olivia had directed company funds into Hale estates, private events, luxury travel, and Richard’s failed investment ventures.
The birthday party appeared as a marketing expense.
The pink cake had been purchased with company money legally belonging in part to Maya.
So had Vanessa’s fee.
So had the private investigator who found her.
Olivia had used Anna’s stolen resources to locate and trap Anna’s daughter.
Grace prepared a fraud petition.
Richard countered by claiming Maya’s marriage made him an equitable partner in any recovered assets.
The premarital agreement defeated most of that argument. Anna’s dormant trust remained separate property.
The spousal agreement Maya refused to sign would have changed that.
Her caution had saved the inheritance before she knew it existed.
Richard’s next tactic involved Lily.
He requested unsupervised visitation and argued that Maya was alienating the child by discussing the cake attack.
The child advocate interviewed Lily alone.
Lily described the party without prompting.
“Daddy pushed Mommy into my cake.”
“What happened after?”
“Grandma smiled.”
“Did Mommy tell you to say that?”
“No.”
“Do you want to see Daddy?”
Lily thought carefully.
“Only if he can’t touch Mommy.”
The court granted supervised visits.
Richard arrived at the first session carrying gifts and a replacement pink cake.
Lily refused to enter the room.
“I don’t want that cake.”
Richard asked the supervisor to explain that it was meant as an apology.
Lily hid behind Maya.
“You can’t fix the old cake with a new one.”
Maya had never taught her that sentence.
Children understood symbols adults tried to purchase away.
Richard left the cake with the receptionist.
During the visit, he told Lily that Maya was keeping them apart because she wanted Grandma Olivia’s company.
The supervisor ended the session.
The report documented attempted emotional manipulation.
Richard’s visitation remained supervised.
That evening, Olivia was served with the Vale fraud petition.
She did not call Maya.
She called Julian.
The conversation was recorded with his consent.
“You were supposed to find the ring and bring it to me,” Olivia said.
“I was supposed to bring Anna’s daughter to the trust.”
“Anna’s daughter was never meant to know the difference.”
Maya listened from Grace’s office.
Olivia had not merely searched for her.
She had originally tried to hire Julian to locate the ring itself.
The family believed the ring contained the only surviving account list.
Julian refused.
Olivia then sent the private investigator who led Richard to Maya.
Before ending the call, Olivia said:
“If Maya opens the Vale archive, she will learn why Anna stopped trying to come home.”
Julian looked toward Maya.
“What archive?”
He did not know.
Olivia laughed softly.
