Chapter 21 - Our separation review

Six months after I found Hannah in the bedroom, Tyler and I met with Dana.
Not marriage counseling.
Legal separation review.
Did we want:
Divorce.
Continue separation.
Reconcile and dismiss filing.
Dana did not care emotionally.
She wanted instructions.
Our finances were now cleanly separated.
Parenting functioning.
No property emergency.
House still jointly owned.
We had not sold because neither filed divorce.
Could maintain.
Then Tyler said:
“I don’t want a divorce.”
Dana looked at me.
I said:
“I don’t know.”
Tyler nodded.
No pressure.
Then Dana asked:
“What legal outcome do you want today?”
I respected that.
“Continue separation another three months.”
Done.
No court theatrics.
Then outside, Tyler asked if I wanted coffee.
I said yes.
At the café:
No lawyers.
No Hannah.
No Janet.
He said:
“I need to tell you something before you hear it somewhere else.”
My stomach tightened automatically.
He noticed.
“Not a new secret.”
“Good start.”
“Mom offered to pay my apartment rent if I withdrew support for Hannah’s trustee petition.”
I stared.
“When?”
“Two months ago.”
“Did you take it?”
“No.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
He looked down.
“I thought it was between me and Mom.”
I almost laughed from exhaustion.
Then he said:
“But I realized that’s the same sentence I used about everything.”
There.
“So I’m telling you.”
I leaned back.
“What did you say to her?”
“No.”
“That’s it?”
“Then she said I was ungrateful. I left.”
No receipt.
No secret account.
No heroic confrontation.
Just no.
Behavior.
Then he asked:
“Does telling you now count as performing because you’re watching?”
I laughed unexpectedly.
“That’s your problem.”
He smiled.

For the first time in months, I saw my husband rather than the person who frightened me.
That scared me differently.
