Chapter 24 - Emily asks the question we avoided

Emily was seven.

Adults had spent months carefully saying:

Aunt Hannah.

Grandma made a trust mistake.

Dad found out late.

No one needs to worry.

Eventually she asked:

“Why didn’t Grandma want Hannah to be Dad’s sister?”

Tyler and I were both there.

His weekend.

My house.

We had begun having one family dinner every Sunday even while separated.

Not reconciliation.

A routine for Emily.

Tyler answered:

“Grandma was hurt by things Grandpa did a long time ago, and she treated Hannah unfairly because of that.”

Emily frowned.

“What did Grandpa do?”

I looked at Tyler.

He said:

“He had a relationship before Grandma and him were married that made everyone’s family complicated.”

Technically they married after Hannah's birth. No affair during marriage.

Good.

Then Emily:

“Did Grandpa know Hannah?”

“Yes.”

“Did Dad?”

“Not until recently.”

“Did you know when we came to Grandma’s?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Tyler looked down.

“Because I was scared.”

“Of me?”

“No.”

“Mom?”

He looked at me.

“Partly.”

Emily stared.

“Mom is not scary.”

I laughed.

Tyler smiled.

“She can be.”

I kicked his shoe lightly under table.

Then he became serious.

“I was afraid if I told Mom, everything would explode before I understood it.”

Emily said:

“But it exploded anyway.”

There.

Seven years old.

Entire lesson.

Tyler nodded.

“Yes.”

Then:

“So next time tell Mom?”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

Emily took another bite of pasta.

Problem solved.

Then she asked:

“Can Hannah come for dinner?”

Tyler and I both froze.

Not because no.

Because that was the first time she had asked.

We invited her two weeks later.

Hannah came with dessert.

No suitcase.

No wine.

No closed bedroom.

Emily showed her family photo album.

At one point she held up a picture of Tyler at age eight.

Then Hannah at age eight.

“Same eyebrows!”

Everyone laughed.

May you like

I did too.

No one had to keep quiet.
