Chapter 25 - The decision
Nine months after I opened Janet’s door, Tyler asked me one question.
“Do you want me to come home?”
Not:
When.
Not:
Why haven’t you.
Not:
Emily needs us.
Just:
Do you want me to?
I did not answer immediately.
I thought about:
The woman behind the bedroom door.
The half-packed suitcase.
The two wine glasses.
Eleven weeks of secrecy.
Six years of trust money I never bothered to understand.
Tyler accepting thirty-five thousand after he knew there was a dispute.
Tyler refusing Janet’s release.
Tyler turning over records.
Tyler moving out of his mother’s house.
Tyler separating parenting from trust litigation.
Tyler telling Janet no without asking me for instructions.
Tyler telling me about the rent offer because he recognized the old pattern before I did.
None of those erased anything.
Together, they meant something.
I said:
“I don’t want to go back to the marriage we had.”
He nodded.
“Neither do I.”
“That sounds like a line.”
“It probably is.”
I almost smiled.
Then:
“If you come home, it isn’t because the trust case is over.”
“I know.”
“It isn’t because you weren’t cheating.”
“I know.”
“It isn’t because Emily wants it.”
“I know.”
“It’s because I’m choosing to try.”
He swallowed.
“Okay.”
Then I said:
“You keep the apartment for one more month.”
He looked surprised.
“Why?”
“Because moving back in should not be the same day we decide.”
He laughed softly.
“That is extremely you.”
“Is that bad?”
“No.”
Then he asked:
“Can I tell Emily?”
“Together.”
That night we did.
Emily stared.
“Dad is moving back?”
“In a month.”
“Why a month?”
I answered:
“Because grown-ups are annoying.”
She accepted.
Then:
“Is he sleeping in your room?”
Tyler choked on water.
I said:
“Emily.”
“What?”
Seven.
No shame.
We told her:
Private adult question.
She rolled her eyes.
Then ran upstairs to make a calendar.
No dramatic family hug.
No guaranteed happily ever after.
A decision to try.
