Chapter 4 - the house David said was empty

David Cole lived forty miles away.
Divorced.
No children.
Owner of a small logistics company.
Michael described him as the family member who stopped attending holidays after a violent argument with Walter six years earlier.
“What argument?” Mara asked.
“He accused Dad of running illegal shipments through his trucks.”
Erin stared.
“You never told me that.”
“I thought David was drunk.”
“Was he?”
Michael looked ashamed.
“I don’t know anymore.”
David was not home.
His black SUV sat in the driveway.
A warrant was obtained after security footage from Walter’s neighborhood showed the vehicle leaving with Judith in the passenger seat the previous afternoon.
Inside the SUV investigators found dog hair.
A veterinary sedative wrapper.
And Scout’s blue leash.
Erin’s knees weakened.
Mara caught her arm.
“Hair does not tell us condition.”
Michael looked ready to break the vehicle window with his bare hands.
Mara stopped him.
“We do this properly.”
Inside David’s house, no dog.
But there was evidence someone had been there recently.
A water bowl in the laundry room.
Paw prints on the back tile.
A chewed piece of rope.
Sophie identified it from a photograph.
“Scout loves those.”
Scout had been alive here too.
Recently.
Then where was he now?
A neighbor’s camera provided the answer.
At 10:18 p.m., David returned home.
He carried Scout—awake—into the SUV.
Then drove away.
Mara traced highway cameras.
The SUV traveled toward an industrial district.
Destination likely:
Cole Research Annex.
The supposedly closed facility.
Federal agents moved quickly.
The annex sat behind chain-link fencing beside an old cold-storage warehouse.
David’s SUV was outside.
Mara entered with a team.
Erin and Michael remained behind the perimeter.
Forty minutes felt like four hours.
Then Mara emerged.
No Scout.
No David.
But the facility was active.
Not abandoned.
Fresh shipping labels.
Refrigeration running.
Records computers recently wiped.
Several empty animal crates.
Michael stared.
“My father told everyone this place closed.”
“It did on paper.”
Mara held up a bagged document.
A handwritten transport log.
D. COLE.
David’s initials appeared repeatedly.
Walter had protected David because David was part of the operation.
Or appeared to be.
Then Mara found another name.
M. COLE.
Michael.
Erin looked at her husband.
“What is that?”
“I don’t know.”
His name appeared on shipment authorizations dating back eighteen months.
Michael went pale.
“I never signed these.”
Mara studied him.
“Your electronic credential?”
“I haven’t worked for Dad’s company in eleven years.”
“But you had access once?”
“Yes.”
Someone had been using Michael’s identity.
Erin thought of the flash drive.
“Is that why you started investigating?”
Michael nodded.
“I got a tax notice connected to consulting income I never earned.”
“So you found invoices.”
“Yes.”
“And hid copies at your father’s house?”
“I thought Dad would never search his own garage wall.”
Erin stared.
“You suspected him and still let Sophie stay there?”
Michael’s face collapsed.
“I thought it was financial fraud.”
“That doesn’t make this better.”
“No.”
He did not defend himself.
Mara interrupted.
“We found a computer backup.”
One file showed Michael’s forged signature authorizing transfer of research materials.
Another showed payments into an account.
Account holder:
Erin Cole.
Erin stared.
“My account?”
She had never seen it.
The account used her Social Security number but a different mailing address.
Someone had created an identity-based financial trail around both Erin and Michael.
Mara’s voice became grim.
“If this operation collapses, the records point toward you two.”
Erin understood.
Walter had not merely been committing something illegal.
Someone had been preparing scapegoats.
Then an agent exited the annex carrying a transparent evidence bag.
Inside was Scout’s collar.
Blue.
Name tag intact.
Sophie’s phone number engraved on the back.
Erin stopped breathing.
“Where was it?”
Mara looked toward the annex.
“Inside an office drawer.”
Not an animal holding area.
An office.
Someone had deliberately removed the collar.
May you like
And stored it.
👉 Scout’s collar was found inside the secret facility, while forged records simultaneously framed Erin and Michael as participants in Walter’s operation.
