Chapter 8 - the photograph beside Sophie’s name

The next recovered file contained photographs.

Dogs.

Crates.

License plates.

Warehouses.

Then family photos.

Erin stared.

Sophie leaving school.

Michael loading groceries.

Erin walking Scout.

Photographs taken from cars.

From across streets.

Someone had surveilled them.

“Why?” Erin asked.

Mara enlarged the date metadata.

The first photograph appeared only three days after Scout’s adoption.

The network noticed immediately that K-417 had resurfaced.

Why not simply steal him then?

Mara found a note.

DO NOT RECOVER UNTIL R.C. APPROVES.

R.C.

Raymond Cole.

Scout remained with Sophie because Raymond wanted him left there.

That made no sense.

Unless Scout himself was useful.

Michael looked at the records.

“Maybe they were watching whether the rescue organization traced him.”

Mara nodded.

“Possible.”

Or using Scout as a marker.

A way to monitor law enforcement.

Then another message:

J.C. REQUESTS FAMILY KEEP ANIMAL UNTIL CLEANUP.

J.C.

Judith Cole?

Erin felt sick.

Judith had actively requested Scout remain with Sophie.

The grandmother who constantly complained about the puppy had apparently wanted him there.

Why?

They searched Judith’s phone backup.

Deleted messages surfaced.

Judith to Raymond:

Girl is attached. Removing him now causes questions.

Raymond:

Then leave him.

Judith:

Michael still suspects Walter.

Raymond:

Use dog if needed.

Erin’s hands shook.

Use dog.

The dinner had been that use.

When Michael’s suspicions became dangerous, Judith weaponized Sophie’s attachment to Scout.

But perhaps something else prompted the escalation.

The day before dinner, Michael’s federal tip had been logged.

He had contacted a USDA hotline anonymously.

Walter’s network may have discovered it.

How?

Inside leak.

Noah Grant.

The corrupt compliance officer.

Grant could see reports.

He notified Raymond.

Raymond notified Judith.

Michael’s flash drive needed to disappear.

Scout found it.

Then everything accelerated.

Mara said:

“This explains the timing.”

Erin looked at Michael.

“You reported your father and then left us inside his house.”

Michael closed his eyes.

“I thought anonymity protected us.”

“You thought wrong.”

“Yes.”

Again, no excuse.

The marriage was now full of fractures.

Some caused by Walter.

Some by Michael’s silence.

Both mattered.

Then David was found.

Alive.

He walked into an emergency room fifty miles away with a cut on his forehead.

No Scout.

He agreed to cooperate.

Raymond had rammed his vehicle.

Pulled him out.

Took Scout.

“Why?” Mara asked.

“The drive was already out of the dog.”

“Did Raymond know?”

“No.”

“Then why keep Scout?”

David looked toward Erin.

“Because Judith told him Sophie saw the transport ledger.”

Erin frowned.

“She didn’t.”

“Raymond doesn’t know that.”

Sophie had seen only the dog scratching at the wall.

But Judith may have exaggerated.

Why?

To push Raymond into taking Scout farther away?

Maybe protect herself.

Maybe eliminate evidence.

David continued.

“Raymond said the dog goes where the other animals go.”

Erin felt cold.

“Where?”

“Transfer site.”

“Which one?”

David hesitated.

“There are several.”

Mara leaned closer.

“Give us all of them.”

David did.

Warehouses.

Farms.

Private kennels.

Agents moved simultaneously.

No Scout at the first.

No Scout at the second.

At the third, they found fifteen dogs with falsified records.

At the fourth, empty crates.

At the fifth—

a child’s red sweater lay beside a cage.

Not Sophie’s.

Different child.

Mara stared.

This case extended beyond animals.

Owners had been threatened before.

Families used.

Children manipulated.

The network’s intimidation method was repeatable.

Then an agent called.

At a rural transfer site, they found Scout.

Alive.

Thin.

Terrified.

But alive.

Erin cried before Mara finished speaking.

Sophie screamed when the video call showed him.

“Scout!”

The puppy lifted his head at her voice.

Tail moved once.

Then again.

Sophie sobbed.

But Mara’s expression remained serious.

“What?”

Mara showed Erin another item recovered from Scout’s crate.

A small photograph.

Sophie’s school picture.

On the back:

NEXT LEVER IF M. TALKS AGAIN.

May you like

Erin felt every trace of relief turn into rage.

👉 Scout was finally recovered alive, but the photograph inside his cage showed the network had already identified Sophie herself as the next target if Michael kept cooperating.
