Chapter 9 - the person feeding Raymond information

Sophie was moved to a protected location with Erin.
Michael went separately under federal instruction.
No social media.
No school attendance until security plans changed.
Scout remained at a veterinary hospital.
He was physically stable.
Sophie asked every hour when he could come home.
“Soon.”
Erin hoped.
Mara now focused on the leak.
Only a few people knew Michael had resumed cooperation after Scout’s recovery.
Yet Raymond’s records anticipated it.
Someone inside the investigation still fed information.
Noah Grant was the obvious suspect.
But Grant had been detained before the “NEXT LEVER” note was written.
So there was another leak.
Mara audited internal access.
One account repeatedly opened Michael’s case.
Agent Peter Sloan.
A federal investigator nearing retirement.
Mara knew him.
Trusted him.
That made it worse.
Sloan denied involvement.
Then a payment surfaced.
$90,000 through a consulting company controlled by Raymond.
Sloan stopped denying.
He claimed he only provided procedural information.
Never threats.
Never locations.
Mara’s expression turned cold.
“Information becomes a weapon when you hand it to people you know will use it.”
Erin understood.
Different context.
Same lesson.
Judith saying she only locked the room.
Walter saying he only controlled his property.
Michael saying he thought anonymous reporting was enough.
Sloan saying he only shared information.
Everyone preferred the smallest description of their own choice.
The consequences were larger.
Sloan gave investigators Raymond’s emergency location.
A private farm owned through a shell company.
Agents raided it.
Raymond had left.
But his office contained decades of records.
The trafficking operation had started smaller.
Illegal dog sales.
False breeding papers.
Then transportation fraud.
Then stolen animals.
Then diversion through commercial routes.
Walter supplied facility access.
Raymond built logistics.
Judith handled certain family contacts.
David became involved as a driver.
Noah Grant provided regulatory protection.
Peter Sloan warned of investigations.
The structure was finally visible.
But one name appeared above Raymond in old records.
C.C.
Michael recognized it.
“Charles Cole.”
His grandfather.
Walter’s father.
Dead twenty-seven years.
Mara frowned.
The network predated Walter.
Again, a family system inherited rather than invented.
Charles Cole had begun moving animals through agricultural channels in the 1980s.
Walter expanded it.
Raymond modernized it.
Michael unknowingly grew up around it.
He had chosen a different life.
But silence still protected the family until now.
Erin asked:
“Did Judith marry into this or know before?”
Records suggested she learned later.
Then participated.
No coercion defense.
No ignorance.
Participation.
Mara recovered one old home video.
Walter and Judith younger.
Michael and David children.
Dog kennels behind them.
Erin stopped.
“Michael said they never had dogs.”
Mara looked at her.
“He may not remember.”
Or chose not to.
When confronted, Michael looked genuinely shocked.
“I remember that place.”
“What was it?”
“Grandpa’s farm.”
“Did you see dogs?”
“I thought they were hunting dogs.”
“How many?”
Michael closed his eyes.
“Dozens.”
The operation had been hidden inside normal childhood memories.
Then Mara found a handwritten note from Charles Cole:
WALTER TOO SOFT.
RAYMOND UNDERSTANDS BUSINESS.
MICHAEL MUST NEVER KNOW.
Michael stared.
His grandfather had deliberately excluded him.
Why?
Another page:
BOY ASKED QUESTIONS AFTER KENNEL FIRE.
Michael went pale.
“I remember a fire.”
“How old were you?”
“Ten.”
“What happened?”
“Dad said lightning.”
Records showed no storm that night.
The fire destroyed a kennel shortly before local inspectors were scheduled to visit.
Michael had apparently seen something.
Then forgotten or suppressed it.
Perhaps that was why Charles wanted him kept ignorant.
But one final line mattered:
JUDITH HANDLED M.’S MEMORY.
Erin stared.
“What does that mean?”
Michael looked confused.
Mara did not speculate.
But Judith had clearly done more than protect Walter’s business.
May you like
She had managed what her own son remembered about it.
👉 Old records suggested Judith had deliberately shaped Michael’s childhood memories after a suspicious kennel fire, raising the possibility that his family had been controlling him for decades.
