PART 1

“Her husband stormed into the hospital demanding lunch for his mother… until his injured wife froze the $100,000 account he thought belonged to him.”

Madeline Brooks was lying in a hospital bed with her left leg wrapped in a heavy brace when her husband finally arrived.

Not worried.

Not breathless.

Not holding flowers.

Julian Carter came through the doorway pointing at her like she had missed an appointment.

Behind him, his mother Eleanor clutched his sleeve in a lavender suit, wearing the wounded expression she saved for public places.

“Get up,” Julian snapped.

“My mother needs lunch.”

The nurse beside the bed froze with a clipboard in her hand.

The doctor looked up from Madeline’s chart.

Madeline stared at her husband.

Her cheek was bruised from the car accident.

Her hair was tangled against the pillow.

Her leg throbbed beneath the brace.

“My leg is broken, Julian.”

Eleanor sighed.

“She has been waiting for hours.”

Julian stepped closer.

“You can sit in a wheelchair.”

The doctor moved between him and the bed.

“She cannot stand, let alone leave this hospital.”

Julian’s jaw tightened.

“She is always dramatic.”

Something in Madeline went cold.

Not weak.

Not afraid.

Cold.

She reached for the phone on the bedside table.

Julian’s eyes narrowed.

“What are you doing?”

Madeline looked at the screen and called the private banking number.

Her voice was calm enough to make Eleanor stop breathing.

“Freeze the joint account.”

“Start the audit.”

Julian’s hand dropped.

“What account?”

Madeline did not look away from him.

“The one you thought belonged to you.”

A professional voice came through the phone speaker.

“Confirmed, Ms. Brooks.”

“All transfers are locked.”

The room went silent.

Eleanor’s mouth opened.

Julian’s face drained of color.

For five years, he had called the account “ours.”

He had used it for his mother’s bills.

His business dinners.

His secret withdrawals.

His emergencies.

But the money had come from Madeline.

The account had been protected under her name.

And the audit had been waiting for one command.

Madeline leaned back against the pillow.

Her body was broken.

But her voice was not.

“You came here demanding lunch.”

“Now explain the missing money.”
