PART 8
The first hearing happened while Madeline still needed a walker.
Grace arrived early at the courthouse and helped her through the side entrance so reporters would not see the brace before the judge did.
Madeline hated needing help.
Grace noticed.
“Needing support is not losing power.”
Madeline nodded.
She was trying to believe that.
Julian arrived in a navy suit, freshly shaved, wearing the wounded expression of a man who expected sympathy to do legal work.
Eleanor sat behind him in lavender.
She looked smaller without a hospital hallway to command.
Julian’s attorney argued first.
He said Madeline had acted impulsively after trauma.
He said the frozen account harmed Julian’s ability to care for his elderly mother.
He said marriages required patience during stressful times.
Grace stood.
“Your Honor, Mr. Carter stormed into a hospital room where Ms. Brooks had a broken leg and demanded she get up to take his mother to lunch.”
The judge looked up.
Grace continued.
“This was witnessed by a doctor, a nurse, and hospital security.”
Then she submitted the statements.
The courtroom went quiet.
The doctor’s statement was direct.
The nurse’s was worse.
She described Julian’s tone.
Eleanor’s insult.
Madeline’s visible injuries.
The judge read for a long moment.
Julian stared at the table.
Grace then presented the attempted twenty-five-thousand-dollar transfer.
The shell company.
The email.
The payments to Eleanor.
The condo refinance inquiry.
Eleanor whispered, “This is not fair.”
The judge looked at her.
“Mrs. Carter, do not speak unless called.”
Eleanor flushed.
Julian was asked directly whether he attempted the transfer after being notified of the accident.
His answer was weak.
“I was stabilizing the household.”
Madeline’s voice came before she could stop it.
“My household was a hospital bed.”
The judge turned toward her.
Madeline continued.
“He did not come to check if I could walk.”
“He came because his mother was hungry.”
No one spoke.
The judge granted the financial freeze.
Ordered full accounting.
Restricted Julian from the condo.
And limited contact to attorneys only.
Outside the courtroom, Julian approached too quickly.
Grace stepped in front of him.
Madeline looked past her.
Julian whispered, “You changed.”
Madeline answered, “No.”
May you like
“I finally stopped serving lunch.”
