PART 7

Eleanor tried to enter the hospital on the third day.

She arrived with a bouquet of white lilies and a face prepared for sympathy.

Hospital security stopped her at the elevator.

Madeline watched from the nurse’s station monitor because the nurse asked if she wanted to approve the visit.

Eleanor smiled tightly at the guard.

“I am her mother-in-law.”

The guard checked the tablet.

“You are not on the approved visitor list.”

Eleanor’s voice sharpened.

“My son is her husband.”

The guard looked unmoved.

“He is also not on the list.”

Eleanor’s smile vanished.

Madeline turned away from the screen.

“No visit.”

The nurse nodded.

The lilies were left at the desk.

Madeline asked that they be sent to the chapel.

Not her room.

Never her room.

That afternoon, Clara sent the second audit file.

It was worse than the first.

Julian had used the joint account to pay Eleanor’s rent supplement.

Eleanor’s driver.

Eleanor’s private dining club.

Eleanor’s credit card.

Eleanor’s vacation deposit.

There were also transfers marked “consulting.”

Grace traced them to a shell business Julian had registered six months earlier.

Madeline stared at the name.

Carter Family Holdings.

She almost laughed.

They had turned theft into a company name.

Grace looked furious in a very quiet way.

“This suggests planning.”

Madeline touched the edge of her hospital blanket.

“How much can we recover?”

“Most of it if the judge orders accounting.”

“And if Julian says I knew?”

Grace slid a printed email across the tray table.

Julian to Eleanor.

Madeline watches the account too closely.

Move small amounts until the refinance clears.

Madeline read the sentence.

Then read it again.

“Refinance?”

Grace nodded.

“He was exploring a loan against the condo.”

Madeline’s heart stopped.

“He cannot.”

“No.”

“Because you bought it before marriage.”

Madeline leaned back.

The room seemed too bright.

Julian had not only spent the money.

He had been looking for the next door.

The condo.

Her safety.

Her last clean place.

That night, Madeline signed the expanded legal petition from her hospital bed.

Her hand hurt.

Her heart hurt more.

But her signature was steady.
