Chapter 10 - the eleven seconds
Daniel, Claire, Nora, Rachel, and the prosecutor watched the video inside a secure evidence room.
The camera faced forward through the windshield. Rain hammered the glass, and the road twisted between dark trees.
Megan’s hands gripped the steering wheel.
Carl sat in the passenger seat.
His presence alone destroyed his original alibi.
The vehicle accelerated down the slope.
Megan pressed the brake pedal.
Nothing happened.
“Carl, what did you do?” she shouted.
He reached toward the wheel.
“Pull over.”
“I can’t stop!”
“Then turn into the field.”
“There’s a guardrail!”
The car swerved.
Megan tried to push his hand away.
Carl grabbed her wrist.
The video ended.
The eleven seconds did not show the collision.
They proved Carl lied, knew the brakes were failing, and physically interfered with the driver.
His attorney could argue that he was trying to help.
But Megan’s first question—what did you do—suggested she suspected sabotage immediately.
The audio fragment recorded before the video held more.
Technicians increased clarity without changing content.
Megan said:
“You cut them.”
Carl answered:
“You should have signed.”
“You’ll kill us both.”
“I only need the car to stop somewhere no one can hear you.”
A horn sounded.
Then static.
The statement transformed the case.
Carl admitted causing the brake failure as coercion. He may have intended only to frighten Megan into signing the house transfer, but deliberately sabotaging a vehicle created an obvious risk of death.
His physical struggle over the steering wheel made that risk even greater.
The district attorney approved a murder charge under a theory of intentional conduct demonstrating extreme indifference to life, along with kidnapping, obstruction, and attempted financial coercion.
Carl received the charging documents in jail.
He requested an immediate meeting.
“I can explain the recording.”
Nora sat across from him.
“You said she should have signed.”
“I wanted her to stop the car.”
“The brakes were cut.”
“I didn’t cut them completely.”
“You weakened a line.”
“I intended a controlled leak.”
“You forced her into the vehicle.”
“She agreed to talk.”
“She sent a message saying you were forcing her.”
Carl’s attorney told him to stop.
He continued anyway.
“The road was supposed to be empty.”
“Megan was inside the car.”
“She was supposed to slow down before the hill.”
“With failing brakes?”
“I told her something was wrong.”
“After you were moving?”
Carl looked toward the camera.
His explanations revealed what he valued.
The plan.
The house.
The timing.
His own safety.
Megan and Emily appeared only as people whose reactions complicated his design.
He finally asked what sentence he would receive if he pleaded guilty.
The prosecutor offered no agreement before reviewing every charge.
The abuse conviction already ensured decades in prison.
The homicide case concerned truth and accountability, not merely increasing punishment.
Rachel told Emily that new evidence had been found about her mother.
The conversation occurred with her therapist present.
“Carl was in the car,” Rachel said.
Emily stared at the floor.
“He said he wasn’t.”
“He lied.”
“Did he make it crash?”
“We believe he damaged the brakes and grabbed the steering wheel.”
“Did Mom know?”
“She realized something was wrong.”
Emily held the rabbit against her chest.
“Was she scared?”
Rachel answered honestly.
“Yes.”
“Was she alone?”
“No. Carl was there, and she knew she was trying to get back to you.”
Emily began crying.
The grief was different now.
Megan had not driven away from her daughter.
She had been prevented from returning.
Daniel later visited the crash site with Nora. A memorial marker stood near the tree. Someone had placed faded blue paper stars beneath it.
Emily had made them while still living with Carl.
He told her she was not allowed to visit, so she gave the stars to a school aide before being withdrawn.
The aide had placed them there.
At the base of the tree, Nora found a rusted piece of metal partly buried in the mud.
A broken seatbelt latch.
Forensic inspection showed that the passenger belt had been cut.
Carl had prepared to escape the moving vehicle if needed.
