Chapter 4 - the missing memory card

Carl’s attorney called the basement a misunderstanding.
At the preliminary hearing, he argued that the chain predated Carl’s occupancy and that Emily entered the basement voluntarily during panic attacks.
The prosecutor presented the ankle bruises, food scraps, outer locks, and the rabbit recordings.
Carl watched without expression.
When the audio played his instruction to lie to a judge, his jaw tightened.
His attorney claimed the file could have been edited.
A forensic technician verified that it was continuous.
Bail was denied.
As deputies led Carl from the courtroom, he looked toward Claire, who sat beside Emily’s advocate.
“You’re teaching her to destroy her own family,” he said.
Claire did not answer.
Emily had remained at the hospital and did not hear him.
The search for the basement camera’s missing memory card continued.
Carl’s movements inside the house were limited to eight minutes before Daniel and Claire arrived. The card was not in his pockets, vehicle, or kitchen trash.
Daniel returned to the scene and reconstructed the path.
Carl entered the basement.
Removed the card.
Climbed the stairs.
Spoke to police through the front door.
He had little time to hide it.
The kitchen sink drain had been dismantled.
The heating vents had been searched.
The yard showed no fresh disturbance.
Claire stood near the living-room fireplace and noticed soot on the floor despite warm weather.
Inside the fireplace were fragments of melted plastic.
The card.
Carl had tried to burn it.
A laboratory recovered partial data from the damaged chip.
Most files were corrupted, but technicians restored three short clips.
The first showed Emily sitting on the cot with the cuff around her ankle.
Carl stood behind the camera.
“Say why you’re downstairs.”
Emily stared at the floor.
“Because I was bad.”
“What did you do?”
“I broke a cup.”
“What else?”
“I tried to run.”
Carl moved closer.
“Tell the truth.”
Emily began crying.
“I asked to go to school.”
The second clip showed her asleep while the camera recorded through the night.
Carl entered at 3:18 a.m., placed food on the floor, and kicked the cot until she woke.
“Eat before it goes cold.”
The third clip began with Carl adjusting the lens.
Another adult voice could be heard faintly from upstairs.
A woman.
“Carl, open that door.”
Megan.
The timestamp was the night she died.
Carl looked toward the basement stairs and answered:
“You sign the transfer first.”
“I’m taking Emily and leaving.”
“You leave with nothing.”
“She is not your property.”
“Neither is the house, apparently.”
Megan descended three steps into view.
Her face was pale with anger.
“Give me the key.”
Carl moved toward her.
The camera tipped sideways.
The rest of the image showed only the concrete floor, but the argument continued.
Megan said:
“I copied the bank records.”
Carl replied:
“Where?”
“Somewhere you’ll never find.”
A hard impact sounded.
Emily screamed from the cot.
The video ended.
Daniel watched it with Nora and the prosecutor.
“This puts him in a violent confrontation with Megan,” Daniel said.
“But not at the crash,” Nora replied.
“Yet.”
The bank records revealed what transfer Carl wanted.
Megan’s house was owned solely in her name. Carl had attempted to refinance it and use the equity to save his failing construction company.
He forged Megan’s signature.
The lender contacted her for verification.
She discovered the fraud the afternoon before her death.
She also discovered withdrawals from Emily’s inherited college account.
Megan intended to report him.
The following morning, she was dead.
Carl told investigators their argument concerned ordinary household spending.
The restored clip proved otherwise.
At the hospital, Emily improved enough to walk a few steps with assistance. Claire visited without her uniform jacket because the child had begun associating dark doorways with Carl.
Emily asked whether the camera showed her mother.
“It showed part of the argument,” Claire said.
“Did Mom say where she hid the papers?”
“No.”
Emily looked down at the rabbit.
“She told Bunny.”
The toy contained dozens of files, but several were silent or corrupted.
One recording had no voices for almost seven minutes.
Then Megan whispered very close to the microphone:
“Emily, if I cannot come back, the blue star knows where the copies are.”
Emily looked at Claire.
May you like
“I drew blue stars everywhere.”
👉 Megan hid evidence before her death, but her clue could point to dozens of places inside the house Carl controlled for nearly a year.
