Chapter 13 - the final drive
The full dashcam card remained missing, but cloud fragments and Megan’s mailed records captured enough of the drive to reconstruct its beginning.
Carl confronted Megan after discovering the evidence package was gone.
He demanded the house transfer.
She refused.
He forced her outside while Emily remained chained in the basement.
According to the phone audio, Megan pressed the horn and tried to attract attention.
Carl entered the passenger side and ordered her to drive.
He believed the brake leak would frighten her before becoming catastrophic.
He intended to stop on an isolated road and force her signature.
But the cut was deeper than he claimed.
The car lost braking pressure before they reached the planned location.
Instead of helping Megan steer toward a safe incline, Carl grabbed the wheel and tried to direct the vehicle toward a field where he could exit.
The car struck the guardrail, spun, and hit the tree on the driver’s side.
Carl escaped through the passenger door before the fire spread.
Megan remained trapped.
A forensic reconstruction showed that her door had jammed on impact. Carl could have attempted to pull her through the passenger side.
He did not.
He took her phone, removed the dashcam unit, and walked back toward the house.
A farm worker found the burning car six minutes later.
By then, Megan had died.
Carl later claimed he fled in shock.
His return to the basement showed purposeful behavior.
He destroyed the phone.
Washed.
Bagged his clothing.
Threatened Emily.
Prepared the bicycle-like story of emotional instability that would later become his general method.
His attorney requested a plea to second-degree murder.
The prosecutor agreed only if Carl admitted the complete sequence in open court and surrendered the original dashcam card.
Carl claimed he no longer had it.
“You removed it,” Nora said during the meeting.
“I lost it while walking home.”
“You stored the housing for a year.”
“I kept many things.”
“You rented a unit two days later.”
“I panicked.”
“Where is the card?”
Carl looked toward the prosecutor.
“What do I receive?”
“Nothing without the truth.”
He refused.
The case proceeded to trial.
Rachel worried about renewed publicity around Emily. The child’s advocate requested that her identity remain protected.
The court agreed.
News reports described her only as Megan’s daughter.
Daniel and Claire testified about the basement discovery because Carl’s threats and concealment after the crash were relevant to consciousness of guilt.
Claire described Emily saying she did not want to go back.
Daniel described Carl’s immediate attempt to control the child’s speech.
The defense argued that later abuse did not prove earlier murder.
The prosecutor agreed with the principle.
Then she presented the brake evidence, phone location, bloodied jacket, dashcam fragments, mailed recordings, and Carl’s own research.
No single item carried the whole case.
Together, they formed one continuous pattern.
Control through manufactured danger.
When Carl testified, he admitted cutting the brake line.
“I wanted Megan to listen.”
“You created a vehicle failure to frighten her?”
“Yes.”
“You forced her to drive?”
“I told her we needed privacy.”
“She said you were forcing her.”
“She was angry.”
“You grabbed the wheel.”
“To avoid the tree.”
“You cut your own seatbelt in advance.”
“I wanted to be able to move.”
“You left her trapped.”
“The car was burning.”
“You took her phone.”
“I wasn’t thinking.”
“You removed the camera.”
“I was afraid.”
“You returned to the basement and told Emily she had no mother.”
Carl went silent.
The jury saw the point at which fear became organization.
He did not wander in shock.
He managed evidence.
The prosecutor asked one final question.
“Did you ever attempt to open Megan’s door?”
Carl looked toward the jury.
“No.”
The answer ended the defense more effectively than anger could have.
At Rachel’s house, Emily waited without watching the news.
She and her therapist planted blue flowers beneath the bedroom window.
When the jury announced it had reached a verdict, Rachel took her hand.
Before the court reconvened, Nora received a call from the salvage yard.
A worker had found a tiny memory card wedged inside the passenger-seat rail removed from Megan’s vehicle.
It matched the dashcam serial family.
Carl had not carried it away.
