Chapter 1 - the voice behind the shed

Ethan Walker knew something was wrong before he reached the back door.
The house was too quiet.
His six-year-old daughter, Lily, had known for three days that he was coming home.
Every video call ended the same way.
“How many sleeps, Daddy?”
“Three.”
“Now two?”
“Two.”
That morning, she had sent him a voice message through her mother’s phone.
Come fast.
Only two words.
Ethan had assumed she was excited.
Now, standing in the kitchen of the suburban Pennsylvania home where his ex-wife, Rachel, lived with Lily, he felt something colder.
“Lily?”
No answer.
The living room television was on.
An empty beer bottle sat beside the sofa.
A man’s work boots rested near the stairs.
Rachel’s boyfriend, Derek Shaw, had been living there for almost six months.
Ethan had met him twice.
Both times Derek had smiled too much.
Rachel had said Ethan was being territorial.
Maybe she had been right.
Maybe not.
“Lily!”
Ethan checked her room.
Empty.
Bed unmade.
Stuffed animals lined along the pillow.
A pink sweater lay on the floor.
The closet door was open.
No child.
He called Rachel.
Straight to voicemail.
Then he called Derek.
No answer.
Ethan stepped outside.
The late-summer sunset painted the backyard gold.
A plastic swing moved slightly in the warm wind.
The shed stood near the fence.
Beside it was an old rusty dog kennel Ethan remembered from years earlier, back when Rachel’s parents owned a Labrador.
It had not been used for a dog in almost a decade.
“Lily?!”
A tiny voice answered.
“Daddy...?”
Ethan stopped breathing.
The sound came from behind the shed.
He ran.
Then froze.
Inside the kennel, curled against the far side, sat Lily.
Bare knees.
Dirty white dress.
Blond hair tangled against her face.
She was trembling.
There were visible bruises on her arms and legs, none of them graphic, but enough to make Ethan’s vision narrow.
“Oh my God... Lily.”
He dropped to one knee.
Her eyes filled instantly.
“Daddy.”
Ethan grabbed the kennel door.
Locked.
A padlock hung from the latch.
“Baby, I’m here.”
Lily crawled toward him.
Slowly.
Carefully.
As though every movement hurt.
Ethan pushed his hand through the bars.
She wrapped both hands around two of his fingers.
“Mommy’s boyfriend said bad kids have to sleep out here.”
Everything inside Ethan went silent.
Not calm.
Something much colder.
He forced his voice to remain steady.
“Who touched you?”
Lily flinched.
“Who did this?”
She glanced toward the house.
The back door moved.
Someone was opening it.
Ethan immediately shifted his body between Lily and the house.
“Stay with me, baby.”
The door swung wider.
Derek stepped outside.
He wore jeans and a gray T-shirt.
In one hand was a set of keys.
He stopped when he saw Ethan kneeling beside the kennel.
For several seconds, neither man spoke.
Then Derek said:
“You’re early.”
Ethan rose.
Slowly.
“Open it.”
Derek looked toward Lily.
“She’s being punished.”
Ethan stared at him.
“Open. The. Door.”
“She’s fine.”
From inside the kennel came a tiny whisper.
“Daddy, don’t make him mad.”
That sentence nearly destroyed Ethan’s control.
He stepped forward.
Derek stepped backward.
“Listen, Marine, don’t come into my house acting—”
“Rachel owns this house.”
“She said I handle discipline when she’s gone.”
“Gone where?”
Derek’s face changed.
Only slightly.
Ethan noticed.
“Where is Rachel?”
“At work.”
“Her shift ended two hours ago.”
Derek said nothing.
Ethan reached for his phone.
Derek’s confidence disappeared.
“Who are you calling?”
“911.”
“You don’t need cops.”
Ethan pressed the screen.
Behind him, Lily suddenly said:
“Daddy?”
He turned.
She pointed weakly toward the above-ground pool on the other side of the yard.
Its blue cover was partially pulled back.
“Don’t go near the water.”
Ethan’s stomach tightened.
“Why?”
Lily’s eyes filled with fear.
“Because someone else is there.”
Ethan stopped.
May you like
Derek’s face went white.
👉 Ethan had come home expecting to rescue only Lily—but her warning about the pool suggested something even worse had happened in the backyard.
