Chapter 4 - the attorney who called it preparation
Michael Crane agreed to an interview with counsel present.
He looked uncomfortable.
“I drafted what my client requested.”
“Why?” Detective Collins asked.
“He said Rachel traveled for work.”
“She doesn’t.”
“That’s what I was told.”
“Did you verify?”
“No.”
“Did you know she wanted him out?”
“No.”
“Did you witness her signature?”
“No.”
“Who arranged notarization?”
“Mr. Shaw.”
Crane insisted he had no knowledge of forgery.
Maybe true.
But emails showed Derek asked another question:
If Rachel is temporarily unavailable, does authorization let me keep child from biological father?
Crane replied:
Not against valid custody order.
Derek:
What if father is deployed?
Crane:
Court order still controls.
Ethan was not deployed.
He had recently completed an overseas training assignment and was returning stateside permanently.
Derek knew that.
Rachel had told him.
The timing mattered.
Ethan was coming home.
Rachel was ending the relationship.
Derek’s access to both household and money was shrinking at once.
Then the forensic team recovered data from Rachel’s broken phone.
One unsent draft:
Ethan, I need to tell you something before you get here. Lily has been—
The message ended.
Never sent.
Ethan stared at it.
Rachel had been preparing to warn him.
What stopped her?
The phone broke at approximately 5:14 p.m. according to internal diagnostics.
Neighbor video showed Rachel running into the backyard at 5:06.
Lily estimated she was placed in the kennel around the same time.
Police reconstructed:
Rachel returns home.
Argument.
Derek attempts to punish Lily.
Rachel intervenes.
Derek confines Lily.
Rachel tries to call or message Ethan.
Phone breaks.
Then Rachel disappears.
The pool area became central.
Crime-scene technicians found a small blood trace beneath the deck.
Human.
Too little to interpret without testing.
Ethan’s stomach turned.
Detective Collins warned:
“Do not jump ahead.”
He nodded.
DNA results came later.
Rachel’s.
Still no proof of what happened.
But something physical occurred near the pool.
Then a search dog tracked Rachel’s scent from the deck to the side gate.
Across two yards.
Toward the alley.
And stopped near a service road.
She may have left the property alive.
Or been moved.
Police requested traffic cameras.
At 5:32 p.m., a dark SUV passed through the service road.
Registered to:
Derek’s older brother, Trevor Shaw.
Trevor lived twenty miles away.
He claimed his wife had the SUV.
His wife denied it.
Trevor changed his story.
Detective Collins asked:
“Did Derek call you?”
“No.”
Phone records:
Derek called Trevor at 5:17.
Three minutes.
Trevor arrived near the house approximately ten minutes later.
Derek said Trevor came to borrow tools.
No tools appeared to leave.
The SUV left at 5:33.
Rachel’s phone remained at the house.
Her purse remained.
Her car remained.
Ethan looked at the evidence board.
“This isn’t only Derek.”
“Possibly not.”
Lily then added another detail.
The interviewer asked whether anyone else had been in the backyard.
“Uncle Trevor.”
Ethan stared.
“When?”
“After Mommy stopped yelling.”
“What did he do?”
“He told Derek to get a blanket.”
Detective Collins went still.
“What blanket?”
Lily pointed toward the hospital blanket around her.
“Like this. But gray.”
Police searched Derek’s truck.
No gray blanket.
The house linen closet was missing one large gray moving blanket Rachel used during home projects.
Trevor’s SUV was seized.
Its cargo area had recently been cleaned.
Too recently.
Chemical residue consistent with heavy upholstery cleaner.
Then investigators found something under the rear seat.
A silver earring.
Rachel wore small silver hoops almost every day.
Ethan recognized it.
“She had those at Lily’s school recital.”
DNA testing later confirmed skin cells consistent with Rachel.
Trevor stopped cooperating.
Derek demanded an attorney.
The missing-person case became a suspected abduction investigation.
Yet Rachel still had not been found.
Then Lily asked Ethan one morning:
“Did Mommy go where Grandpa’s red cabin is?”
Ethan frowned.
“What cabin?”
“Derek said Uncle Trevor could take her there if she didn’t stop.”
Ethan looked at Detective Collins.
Neither man had mentioned a cabin.
Property records showed Trevor co-owned a hunting cabin in the Pocono Mountains.
