Chapter 6 - Linda’s version of love
Police found Linda Bennett at a motel outside Scranton.
She did not run.
She appeared offended by the suggestion she had done anything wrong.
“I was protecting Rachel.”
Detective Collins stared at her.
“From what?”
“Herself.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
“You communicated with Derek.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because my daughter makes terrible decisions when emotional.”
“Did you introduce them?”
“Yes.”
Linda said it as though arranging a date for her adult daughter were ordinary.
“Derek seemed stable.”
“He had assault complaints and significant debt.”
“I didn’t know.”
Bank records suggested she did.
Six weeks before Rachel met Derek, Linda transferred $9,000 to a debt held by Trevor’s company.
“Why?”
Linda’s attorney intervened.
She eventually answered:
“To help Derek get back on his feet.”
Before he even met Rachel.
Detective Collins leaned forward.
“You paid a man before introducing him to your daughter?”
Linda’s composure cracked.
“He was supposed to help.”
“With what?”
Silence.
“With the company?”
Linda looked away.
The Bennett trust explained more.
Rachel’s father, Harold, had spent thirty years building self-storage properties around Pennsylvania.
Near death, he changed the ownership structure.
Rachel received controlling shares because Harold distrusted Linda’s spending and her close relationship with several developers.
Linda believed the decision humiliated her.
She had expected to control the company.
Instead, her daughter did.
Then Rachel refused to sell several properties.
One buyer in particular was desperate.
Crown Ridge Development.
Offer:
$14 million.
Rachel believed the sites were worth closer to $22 million.
She refused.
Linda wanted the sale.
Derek began pressuring Rachel months later.
Emails recovered from his account:
DEREK:
Your mom says the Crown Ridge offer is fair.
RACHEL:
Why are you discussing my company with my mother?
DEREK:
Because she understands business.
RACHEL:
Then date her.
The relationship deteriorated.
Derek then obtained money from Linda.
$48,000 over six months.
“Consulting.”
No clear services.
Linda’s involvement looked increasingly deliberate.
Still, did she know Lily was locked in the kennel?
She denied it.
Did she know Rachel would be confined?
Denied.
Did she know Trevor would transport her?
Denied.
Then police confronted her with a message from the afternoon Rachel disappeared.
DEREK:
She won’t sign.
LINDA:
Then scare her. Do not hurt her.
DEREK:
And the kid?
LINDA:
Keep Lily out of the conversation.
Detective Collins read it aloud.
“You told a man with a history of aggression to scare your daughter.”
Linda began crying.
“I meant threaten to leave.”
“You wrote ‘scare her.’”
“I didn’t mean this.”
Maybe she did not.
Maybe she had built the first domino and convinced herself she controlled how far it would fall.
Ethan watched from behind glass.
Linda had always said:
Family comes first.
He now understood the problem.
She meant:
Family control comes first.
Then investigators asked about Rachel’s current location.
Linda genuinely appeared frightened.
“I thought Derek would let her go once she signed.”
“Signed what?”
The attorney tried to stop her.
Too late.
“A voting proxy.”
The controlling 51% share.
Derek had been pushing Rachel to sign temporary voting authority to Linda.
Why?
So Linda could approve the Crown Ridge sale.
Rachel refused.
Derek confined her.
The plan escalated.
Linda insisted she never authorized abduction.
But she knew Derek intended coercion.
She had promised him:
Once proxy is signed, your debts are cleared.
There was his financial motive.
Trevor’s too.
Then Detective Collins showed Linda a photograph of Lily’s kennel.
For the first time, Linda broke completely.
“No.”
“You knew Lily was there?”
“No.”
“Did Derek ever discuss discipline?”
“He said she was spoiled.”
“And?”
“I told him not to interfere.”
“Did Rachel tell you he scared Lily?”
Silence.
“Mrs. Bennett.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“A month ago.”
“What did you do?”
Linda cried.
“I told Rachel relationships take work.”
Ethan looked away.
Another adult who had been warned.
Another choice.
That evening search teams found the Pine Ridge water tower Rachel had described.
Nearby were several abandoned farm buildings.
One had recently been used.
Inside:
A chair.
Food wrappers.
A broken charging cable.
Rachel’s fingerprints.
And another note scratched into dust:
NOT SAFE WITH LINDA.
Below it:
ASK DAD ABOUT CROWN RIDGE.
Rachel’s dead father.
Harold Bennett.
He had apparently known something about the developer before he died.
