Chapter 1 - the crutch across the marble

Seline waited until Clara placed both wooden crutches firmly beneath her arms.

The six-year-old stood in the center of the mansion’s grand entrance hall, dressed in gray, her weak right leg trembling beneath her. Warm afternoon light poured through the arched windows and reflected across the marble floor.

Clara had almost reached the staircase when Seline stepped toward her.

“Stand properly and stop embarrassing me!”

Her emerald gown swept around her ankles as she kicked one crutch from beneath the child’s arm.

Wood struck marble with a violent crack.

The crutch slid across the hall and stopped beneath an elegant side table.

Clara gasped.

Her remaining crutch shook as she tried desperately to keep herself upright.

“Please… I can’t stand without it.”

Seline made no move to help.

“You can stand. You simply enjoy making people feel sorry for you.”

Clara reached toward the missing crutch, but it lay several feet away. Her right knee began folding inward.

The mansion’s front door opened.

Adrien Mercer entered carrying a leather briefcase and a small paper bag containing the cinnamon cookies Clara loved. He had returned from Boston a day earlier than expected after his final meeting was canceled.

He heard the crutch strike the floor.

Then he saw his daughter falling.

“Clara!”

The briefcase and bag dropped from his hands.

Adrien crossed the foyer as Clara’s remaining crutch slipped against the marble. He caught her moments before her head struck the floor and pulled her tightly against his chest.

Clara clung to his neck.

Her entire body trembled.

Adrien looked at the crutch lying across the hall.

Then at Seline.

She had stepped backward, but her expression had already changed. The anger disappeared. In its place came public sweetness and manufactured concern.

“Adrien, thank goodness. Clara refused to use her crutches correctly. I was trying to teach her balance.”

“You kicked it away.”

“It slipped.”

“I watched you.”

Clara buried her face against his shoulder.

Adrien felt how light she had become.

“What did you do to my daughter?”

Seline lifted both hands.

“Nothing. She exaggerates whenever she is corrected.”

Clara pointed shakily toward her.

Adrien lowered his voice.

“You can tell me.”

“She does it when you leave.”

The sentence emptied the hall of air.

Adrien looked toward the servants and guests frozen near the sitting room. No one met his eyes.

“How many times?” he asked.

Clara’s fingers tightened around his collar.

“I don’t know.”

Seline stepped forward.

“She is frightened because you are frightening her.”

Adrien turned his body, completely shielding Clara.

“Do not come closer.”

“You’re taking the word of a child who lies for attention.”

Clara whimpered.

Adrien carried her toward the sofa and placed her carefully against the cushions. Her right ankle looked swollen. Red marks circled both forearms where the crutches pressed beneath them.

He took out his phone.

Seline’s voice sharpened.

“Who are you calling?”

“An ambulance.”

“She does not need an ambulance.”

“She nearly fell because you removed her support.”

“I was performing an exercise her therapist recommended.”

“Which therapist?”

Seline hesitated.

Adrien noticed.

Clara touched his sleeve.

“She makes me stand until my leg stops feeling.”

He looked at her.

“What happens then?”

“She takes pictures.”

Seline’s face lost its careful calm.

Adrien called emergency services and requested police as well.

“You’re destroying this family over one misunderstanding,” Seline said.

“No. I’m finally looking at what happens inside it when I’m gone.”

As the ambulance approached, Adrien picked up the fallen crutch.

Something felt wrong.

He placed it beside the second one.

One was noticeably shorter.

Not from wear.

The adjustment pin had been moved and sealed into the wrong position with clear adhesive.

Someone had deliberately made Clara uneven whenever she tried to walk.

Adrien stared at Seline.

She glanced toward the hallway exit.

👉 Clara’s fall had been engineered before Seline ever kicked the crutch away.
