Chapter 13 - the verdict seline could not edit
The jury returned after eleven hours.
Seline stood beside her attorney wearing a conservative navy dress. She kept her eyes forward while the clerk read each count.
Guilty of financial fraud.
Guilty of falsifying medical records.
Guilty of unlawful medication administration.
Guilty of child endangerment.
Guilty of evidence fabrication.
The final abuse charge required the longest explanation from the judge, but the verdict was the same.
Guilty.
Seline’s composure held until the altered crutches were entered into the sentencing record as permanent evidence.
Then she looked toward Adrien.
He showed no triumph.
Clara was not in the courtroom.
She was painting yellow flowers at home.
Seline requested permission to speak before sentencing.
The judge warned her that anything she said could affect related investigations.
She spoke anyway.
“I cared for a child whose father treated money as parenthood.”
Adrien remained still.
“I gave Clara structure. I attended appointments. I dealt with her moods. He appeared with gifts and expected love.”
Some of the criticism contained truth.
Adrien had been absent.
Seline used that truth as shelter for deliberate harm.
She continued.
“The girl learned quickly that weakness controlled him. Every fall brought attention. Every tear changed his schedule.”
The prosecutor objected.
The judge stopped Seline.
“You were convicted because you engineered falls and documented the tears.”
For the first time, Seline raised her voice.
“She would have walked away from me.”
The room became silent.
Her attorney touched her arm.
Seline pulled away.
“If Clara recovered, Adrien would no longer need me. The trust would close around the child. The house would remain Evelyn’s. Everything in that family belonged to a dead woman and a girl who looked like her.”
The financial motive had always carried resentment beside it.
Clara’s recovery threatened more than income.
It threatened Seline’s place inside the family she had targeted.
The judge imposed a lengthy prison sentence, restitution, and permanent prohibition from controlling a child’s medical or financial decisions.
Vale Health Holdings was dissolved.
Seline’s Greenwood ownership transferred into restitution.
Her marriage to Adrien ended through an uncontested divorce based on fraud and abuse.
The legal outcome closed the immediate danger.
It did not answer Room 214.
St. Catherine’s required a court order before releasing the archived video because it contained medical footage of other children. Mara obtained one after the verdict.
Adrien chose not to watch immediately.
Clara’s therapist advised allowing the child to decide whether she wanted details about the earliest interference.
Clara asked one question.
“Could it help my leg?”
Dr. Ward answered.
“It might help us understand what happened.”
“Then watch it.”
Adrien, Mara, Grace, and Dr. Ward viewed the footage without Clara present.
The recording began with a rehabilitation nurse leaving Room 214.
Three-year-old Clara slept in the bed.
Her right leg rested inside a soft support.
Seline entered wearing a hospital administrative badge.
She carried a paper bag.
She looked into the hallway before closing the door.
The camera had no audio.
Seline removed a medication bottle from Clara’s bedside tray and replaced it with another.
She then opened the child’s chart and photographed several pages.
Before leaving, she leaned over Clara and touched the injured leg.
The footage ended when the nurse returned.
Dr. Ward paused the image.
“That bottle was supposed to contain a medication used to reduce inflammation around the damaged nerve.”
“What could she have replaced it with?” Adrien asked.
“We need the old pharmacy inventory.”
Mara already had a warrant.
The inventory showed that one bottle of a muscle-relaxing compound disappeared from the same wing that day.
Repeated use could suppress movement, worsen weakness, and make therapy less effective.
Seline’s employment file showed she resigned two days later.
She had not been dismissed merely for entering the room.
The hospital suspected medication tampering but never proved it.
Adrien had never been told.
The original incident report was marked resolved after the bottle could not be found.
Then Mara enlarged the final second of the footage.
Before Seline closed the door, she looked directly toward the camera.
She knew it was there.
